bcp858
Hi - had something interesting happen today. I went in for a fill up on my 02 RT and when I unlocked the gas cap I noticed moisture on the underside cap and water in the outer ring of the neck of the gas cap. I noticed no "whoosh" when I opened the tank. Recent work includes replacing fuel pump. My vent lines appear to be free of debris. The bike is running very well. We did have some good hard rain today. Where should I start looking? Perhaps when I put the cap/neck back together I mis-threaded? Thanks for any help on this issue. Link to comment

Big Bri , water in that outer ring is normal after a rain or washing as it is not a sealed area & water can enter there.. If you look closely you will see a hole in that ring that drains the water down & out the water drain tube.. As for water on the bottom of the fuel fill cap? If inside the sealed area then that means you have moisture in the tank (not abnormal if you are using gasoline with a lot of alcohol in it).. If outside the sealed center ring then that is just moisture from that unsealed outer ring.. It sure wouldn’t hurt to blow down through that drain hole in the outer ring to make sure it is actually exiting (draining) behind the R/H foot peg area.. If you somehow crossed the tank vent line & water drain line while working on the tank you might be draining that ring into your vapor canister (not a good thing).. Twisty Link to comment
bcp858
Thank you for your response. I questioned that myself and thought I was careful when taking the bike apart. I took tape and labeled all the lines with a number on each side and matched them up. I seem to remember reading about folks doing the can-ectomy. Any benefits to this? Link to comment
flars
Re: mixing up the drain lines. As noted above, just blow through the little hole in the filler ring, and if the air comes out down by the ground, you are good to go. A canisterectomy doesn't gain you anything unless the charcoal in the can fills up with gasoline - which it shouldn't normally do, since it only absorbs fuel vapor. If it ain't broke, leave it alone - it's good for the environment. Link to comment
Jim Moore
You have a clogged or pinched vent line, the one that runs from the small hole underneath the gas cap cover to the atmosphere down by your right leg. Open your gas cap, then use a compressor to blow air up through the line. Cover your filler hole with a rag so no debris gets in your tank. Link to comment

Big Bri, it sure won’t hurt to re-verify your lines are hooked up correctly & not pinched.. Your problem (that is if you even have a problem) will be in your DRAIN line not your vent line.. You can try blowing down through that water drain line but a little difficult to do by yourself,, possibly spray some WD-40 into that water drain hole (the one in the outer ring) & see if it comes out down behind the R/H foot peg area.. If you replaced the fuel pump you have a couple of places for possible line mix up.. One is behind the fuel tank (R/H side) where both the vent & water drain lines have connectors & the other is where the tank internal lines come down through the tank & hook to the large plate with the “O” ring around it.. I seem to remember reading about folks doing the can-ectomy No major reason to do it but the bike does look better & cleaner without it & if you don’t have one it can’t plug up on you during a trip,, or plug up unexpectedly & allow your fuel meter sender tube crush.. About the only things that will happen if you remove it will be your bikes impact on the environment (those vapor cans are a major player in stopping unburnt hydro carbons entering the atmosphere (you know the green thing now) & you will possibly smell gasoline fumes after a ride in hot weather then parking the bike in a closed garage.. There other thing to keep in mind is: seeing as your bike was built & imported with that vapor can & it is an emission control device it is technically illegal to remove it under federal law.. Never seen that law enforced anywhere on a motorcycle though as most states didn’t even require it on a motorcycle at the time your bike was built.. Twisty Link to comment

Twisty Whereas all the above is true, if properly removed the bike will run just fine without the canister - they are only fitted for the US market and are in effect an add-on to the original design.
