Got an email from a&s cycles hawking these metal fuel quick disconnect fittings.....for those who've looked into replacing the stock plastic ones or have already done so....are these a good price and is it worth doing to one's motorcycle? Looks to me like it's $36.90 x 2 that you would need.

If you know a better choice/source...please let us know.

There are two sides to the quick-release fuel line connectors. . .one male and one female. 99.9% of the time, when one breaks, it's the "neck" on the male side.

BMW has just introduced a new male side, part number 13 53 7 700 800. It's still fuel-resistant plastic on the inside, where the fuel travels and against which the O-ring seals. That makes sense. But it has a new metal outer shell that should alleviate the problem with the neck breaking. MSRP is about $25. Your BMW dealer can order them if they don't have them in stock already. BMW's warehouses have plenty.

You may want to go to www.jiffytite.com. The 3000 series cost were $15 for the plug and $25 for the socket but that was awhile ago and they may have had a price increase. Still a lot less than A & S.

I got a "you are not authorized to view" on the link so I couldn't check details but if I understood it correctly the A&S offer was $36.90 for a complete unit (one male - one female) and JiffyTite is $40 for a complete unit. How is that a lot less?

Keep getting "You are not authorized to view this page" on the Jiffytite search. frown.gif

That's because it has a (.) after the link..

Just copy & paste this into your search bar.. Or for some just click on it..

Mike

I just checked with the local distributor for Jiffy Tite here in L.A.(Angel City Cycles). He quoted me $102.00 for 2 complete quick disconnects which consists of 2 female and 2 male pieces. So I was right on one piece ($25) and incorrect on the other piece ($15). Sorry for the confusion.

Confession:

Mea Culpa, mea magna culpa. I took my bike in yesterday to have the quick disconnects changed out by the service dept. I figured I could spend two hours and $190 to have them do it, or I could order the parts from ... I didn't know where ... spend what turns out to be $100 for the disconnects and a more for the appropriate FI hose clamps, wait for the parts to show up and then spend 3-4 hours doing a job that was going to be a first-time endeavor (the leading edge of the learning curve always adds time to a job).

If I were a real man, a true BMW motorcycle owner, I'd have done the job myself and experienced the testosterone boost that comes from conquering my fears and the cheap plastic part that BMW put in there.

Hey Craig… Hi from your old location in Michigan. If you had stayed up here, you wouldn't have been able to ride for the last couple months. So don't feel to sorry for yourself. And with about 10" of new snow yesterday.... bncry.gif

The first step on the road to recovery is to........admit that you really need to buy more tools!

The A&S disconnect is die-cast zinc/nickel plated for $37.00. A QD from Omega is chrome plated brass for $39.00.

After a QD failure I went the Omega route loooong before BMW finally fessed up they had a problem that would not go away.

I just bought 2 sets for my bike from McMaster Carr and they were $58, shipped to my door, next day. They are chrome plated brass if i remember correctly.

If you want Omegas, which are plug compatible with the OEM plastic connectors, go to: Omega Link

Order 5/16 couplings:

FT-LCD170-05-Viton

FT-LCD220-05-Viton

Order two each. The current prices are on their web site. I like the Omegas very much. I use the old plastic QD on a piece of hose to drain the tank when I need to remove it. Works great. You only need to connect to the return hose.

What is the best way to remove the BMW hose clamps? What is the best source for replacement 'fuel injection' grade hose clamps? After this QD ordeal, I fell I can't trust my BMW dealer after having paid a small fortune for service and not be even informed the QD recall had been performed on my BMW. Seems open disclosure is in order here given what is a design error. frown.gif

I used a pair of side cutters and just snipped it in half where it is crimped and then pryed it off. Some guys use a dremel to cut them off........but personaly, I'm a little funny about throwing sparks around when I'm working with fuel lines.

Your good old local autoparts store.

Just a word of caution, in case you haven't already read it here or somewhere else, make sure the couplings have VITON o-rings. If they are the regular butyl(?) o-rings the fuel will eventually destroy them and your coupling will start leaking.

Napa has some decent fuel injection grade hose clamps and fuel injection hose. I also got my fuel shutoff clamps there (handy to pinch off fuel lines). For certain things, it seems to me like Napa had better quality than Advance or Autozone.
