SoilSampler
This question is about centerstand smokers only. I know most smoke on side stands. Oil smoke, that is, stinky, blue or whitish, no doubt about it oil smoke. Feel free to comment, too. Link to comment
snod
Only when it is shut down cold. That is to say, if it was fully warmed up when shut down it does not smoke when started next. If I start it and it runs for just a few moments, and then I shut it down, it smokes quite a bit on the next restart. I nearly always center stand my bike, so I can't speak to what happens when side standed. Link to comment
OoPEZoO
When I start my bike it smokes like a bastard regardless of whichever stand I put it on. It usually lasts about 5-10 seconds. It is definitly less when it is on the center stand, but it still smokes. The bike has about 90k miles on it. Does it bother me......Yes, to an extent Am I willing to do anything about it......Not a chance I assume it is either the valve guide seals or the rings are becoming worn. No matter, I don't plan on ever doing anything about it unless I end up burning a valve or something. Then I'll spend the time and money for a rebuild.........until then, I'll be content with my James Bond style smoke screen. Link to comment
Ken H.
Side or center stand, nether is normal. Oil is obviously getting into the combustion chamber where it's never suppose to be. As mentioned, bad valve guide seals or a bad/stuck oil ring are the most likely causes. Whether or not it's bad enough to do something about, only you can decide that. Link to comment
topdal46
59,000 miles, I'm the original owner, I've never had my RT smoke. Link to comment

It has always smoked on startup, particularily bad if left on the sidestand for a lenght of time. I guess you are saying that my bike has been defective since new. It has 32k miles on it now. I also burn about 1 quart of oil every 1500 miles. Link to comment
Cycledude
Why is everyone worried about a few seconds of smoke? Ever see a GL1000 start??? You will know smoke then! Snowy. Link to comment
Tony_K
I also burn about 1 quart of oil every 1500 miles. and not concerned? wow...... 20 quarts of oil in 30k on top of oil changes... wow. Link to comment

No worries here I wouldn't even consider investigating it unless my bike started using/burning an excess amount of oil. As it is, it still burns less per oil change than either of my cars. For the record.....Under daily riding mine burns about 1/2 a quart every 2000 miles. Link to comment
ElevenFifty
04 1150RT - used about 1 qt every 1500 miles until, at about 54K, I did an 835 mile run at high freeway speeds (75+) as part of a SS1000 ride. Now have 66K and except for regular 3K oil changes, I have added no oil. Every time I check the level, I am surprised. Link to comment
karlheinz
my 85 k smokes all the time during start ups.i am loving it.harley riders freak out. Link to comment
NonComp
Mine smokes intermittently. Seems to have something to do with what position the crank is left in when the engine stopped. When it does smoke, you do notice it. Link to comment
DonMcCall
Only have 10,300 miles on a r1150r I bought used (had 1200 miles on it when I bought it two years ago - talk about a NEW used bike!) but it's never smoked - I always centerstand it... Link to comment
bdspler
I put mine on the PATCH! and sometimes gum! Smoking is so blazza. But it seams to be gainning weight! bd Link to comment
GSman
My 1150GS (55K miles)does it once in a while when I leave it on the side stand...no big deal. Link to comment
Delboy
Mine has never smoked, even after i lowered it to the ground unexpectedly one day and it spent a few minutes wheels in the air and cylinder head down hill.I nearly always leave it on the side stand as well. Link to comment
too old to care
Three oil heads (97, 2001, 2004) never any smoke. But you should have seen my 97 K bike. Link to comment
sdpc2
No smoke... but at 22k miles, it still uses about a quart of oil every 2500 miles. My last RT used oil until i did a SS1000 on it. Maybe i just need to THRASH this newer one harder! Link to comment

I nearly always center stand my bike, so I can't speak to what happens when side standed. My 2000 1100 RTP does exactly the same as this! It also uses 1/2 litre of oil every 1500 miles or so. Side or centre stand doesnt matter. As a point of interest my old R80rt did exactly the same. She had 250k, smoked, rattled and leaked! But at that mileage i wasn`t worried. When the 1100 has been on a run and got nice and hot it seems to be fine. I wondered if it was anything to do with the electro plated bores? Link to comment
DaveC
I also burn about 1 quart of oil every 1500 miles. and not concerned? wow...... 20 quarts of oil in 30k on top of oil changes... wow. Well I do not like it, but what am I going to do about it short of a top end engine rebuild? Oil is much cheaper. The bike does run good all of the time. Perhaps I should try a high speed run across Nevada and see if that fixes it. Link to comment
BMT
... except for regular 3K oil changes, I have added no oil. Except for the ~4 litres that you put in between the 6k oil changes. Link to comment

ianboydsnr
My R1100Rt does it on first start up, but my R1150Gs does not do it, it soon clears, so i certainly wont worry about it. Link to comment
Jerry Johnston
I read some years back where (on the oil-head) it had something to do with where the gap in the oil ring lined up and could be cured by rotating the ring. I'd never find the article again but it was in one of the popular BMW mags. Link to comment
outpost22
59,000 miles, I'm the original owner, I've never had my RT smoke. Mine has 52K and has only smoked once. It tipped over in the garage off the bike lift. That sucker smoked for darned near a mile of riding Man it was embarassing. The only worse one I saw was going to the dealer and seeing an older K bike take off down the street. Man that thing was an EPA disaster waiting to happen Link to comment

Slartidbartfast
95 R1100GS coming up on 50K miles needs no oil adding between 6K changes and emits no smoke whichever stand it's left on. When I got it at 22K miles, it was using a little oil but I don't think it was fully broken in. Link to comment
