purolator oil filter

I was told that I could substitute an auto oil filter for the BMW issue on my RT1100. If correct, does anyone have a part number?

thanks1

If you are going to use one of the Purolator filters you might want to do some internet research. The Pure One is said to be very good at filtration but possibly restrictive of oil flow. The Premium model is a standard paper filter said to have an excellent flow rate. Much of this is internet talk and could be baloney.

A Google search on Purolator + flow will give you lots of reading material.
I did and found a few comments but they were all along the line of 'I read in a thread' or "I heard from guy", etc. There was nothing I found that could be substantiated. It mostly seems to relate to a comment made by the author of the famous Oil Filter Study page who stated that the additional pleats 'may reduce pressure', but that was nothing but a supposition (and in fact there is no way to necessarily relate the number of pleats to pressure drop without making some kind of measurement.)

I'm interested because I use the Purolator PL10241 and have never heard this claim before. As far as I can tell it is nothing but Internet lore, but if there is any data beyond an opinion I'd be interested in seeing it.

All I can say is that I used mostly the Purolator L10241 on my R1100RT that I sold with 170K miles, on my R1150R that passed away with 76K miles and now on my R1200GS. Never a problem. Nobody who cut one open found any problems, it fits the same filter wrench as the original BMW filter. I'll keep using it.

I used a Purolator PureOne PL10241 oil filter on my last oil change along with mobil 1 extended performance 15W-50 synthetic oil. Been using Purolator filters for years. Isn't it time for an oil thread? cool.gif

Tried to get one going but responses were along the line of salad dressings. lmao.gif

I use an aftermarket filter so I am not against the idea but from "research" I have seen on the topic there has been nothing more than an evaluation of the construction of the filters, not of the efficiency of the filter media of the various ones that have been dissected.

I agree, but then again I use Fram filters that anyone can see are "junk" just by looking at them. No need for any scientific examination of filtering results needed. grin.gif

Some members here have had oil analysis performed and IIRC, the results were that at 9,000 mile change intervals, the oil was still good.

Since we're talking about oil filters... I noticed that several replies mentioned using synthetic oil - I've been using Mobil One in my Ford pick-up for years, but haven't made the switch with the bike (1150GS with 49,000 miles). If you do use synthetic, do you stay with the same weight? Here in North Georgia, I've been using Castrol 20W50 year-round.

Header: Sent you a PM, but I see you are new. Click on the blue "My Home" link above. Yes, you can run the same weight in synthetic oil (20W-50) or run 15W-50, like I do.
