thinking of buying a new 1200RT

I am currently in New Orleans and drove 862 miles, one way, to get here. The ride was fine except for a sore butt and right wrist (had previous surgery to fix ligament tear). I have the trottlemeister but don't think I can react fast enough if need be so I don't use it.

I thought about getting a new 1200RT and wondered what folks here thought if the purchase was worth it compared to what I already have. I like the idea of the OBC, heated seat, and cruise, however I wasn't sure if the ride was any different include MPG. I see the compression ratio is higher in the 1200 compared to mine requiring higher octane fuel but didn't know of the rear diff or trans ratio were different changing MPG. Lighting has to be improved on the 1200 yet I do have PIAA lights which make up for my ineffective stock lighting. For those having a 1200 can you comment on improvements over the 1150, if you know, or inferiorities, if any. I am leaving very early tomorrow morning so I'll get to your comments later. I opted out of the HD electraglide because of a lack of wind protection compared to what I am used to and noise level. I have a neighbor not 20 feet from my garage and I don't want to bother him at 4am when leaving for my reserve drills.

Try a throttle rocker on your 1150 , Ive used one for years on my 1100 due to neuropathy , I just use the heel of my hand and rarily use a two finger grip, and one finger the brake lever . Tim . thumbsup.gif

I know you wanted to hear from the 1200RT community, but I must admit; I have the same complaint. After 3,100 trip last fall I started to feel my wrist (not bad just one complint, but...). I wish there was an elegant solution (after market that is reasonably priced and fits without looking cheesy) to the cruise control challenge - I love my 1150RT, and have no need to upgrade but the lack of CC solution.

I do have the throttle lock - not a solution that I trust for any length of time/mileage. Hope to hear some of our seasoned riders and how they solved this challenge.

I'll never own another bike without cruise control.I could not go back to the R1150RT after having the R1200RT..Test ride one and take your wallet...You'll never regret it.. thumbsup.gif

My RTP came with a Throttle Meister. Don't seem to like it much. Got a Wrist Rest...Wonderful. I can go all day with my hand open and the weight of it keeps me steaming along. For about 10 bucks you might find the relief you seek. wave.gif

I went from a '04 RT to a '06. I don't miss anything about the '04 except for the looks, much better looking bike in my opinion but I'm way over that by now. The '06 has more power and gets better gas mileage. The '06 is lighter, enough that you can tell the difference and has better ground clearance. The low beams are much better as well. Electronic cruise control is the bomb! For me a bunch of little changes make the '06 a much better bike. YMMV!

I don't get your concern? I have a TM on my R1200ST, you don't have to disengage it first to roll off the throttle.

The R12RT is a fantastic bike and you can't go wrong with it. The cruise control, OBC, ESA and etc. make for great touring. That said, I think you owe it to yourself to also check out the K12GT. Similar ergos and farkles to the RT, but a ton more power. Main difference in ergos (for me) was the RT has more wind protection.

The RT is flickable and sporty, but is to me more of a sport-TOURER where the GT is more SPORT-tourer.

Again, if you have not test ridden the GT, I recommend you do so just so you know the difference and make an informed decision.

Good luck and either one is a proven winner.

It is possible to install a true electrtonic cruise control on the RT:

I believe somebody on this board has done it but couldn't find it. Anway, if you really like your 1150, this setup would get you true cruise. Throw in $1300 or so for a set of Ohlins and you'd have 80% of the 1200 for a lot less coin...

I had an 02, Red RT, and did not know what I was missing until I traded it for a K1200RS (mostly for more power and CRUISE CONTROL) I would normally ride from Reno, to the Bay area before worrying about fuel, vs about 120 before the light would come on for the RS. I now have had an 05, and now an 07, and I use the Corbin with a passenger backrest for the wife, and I usally get about 300 miles before I realize how many miles I have travelled without a thought of stopping. At that point it is actually a full bladder vs empty gas tank blush.gif I have never ridden or owned a bike a enjoy and use more than the 1200RT
