Fuel drips

G'Day All

Recently had the tank of my '96 R1100RT to replace the fuel pump. Since then I have been getting fuel drips from the pipe that goes up to the "thing" in front of the fuel filler inside the tank. Any ideas on what this is for? It is dripping enough to leave a very visible stain on the asphalt. We are also experiencing 39-40C temps and after a 30klm ride to work the bike is under a carport for the day.

should I be concerned or wait until the temps go down. I would love to know what that black thing inside the tank does.

You likely have a crack in the vent hose inside the tank that is allowing fuel into the vent line outside of the tank. Unfortunately the only way to investigate / correct is to pull it back apart.

Hey Ross! I'm not sure what in particular you are referring to, so here are some pictures from my 1100RT for reference:

That should help pinpoint the area of concern for the Board to help with the issue.

It's important to get all the rubber hoses fully "seated" onto their corresponding steel or hard plastic connections, then tighten things up good using new clamps or adjustable ones. The big rubber gasket between the tank and the in-tank assembly is also very important - they swell when exposed to gasoline, so you can either let the old one dry out or get a new one, then make sure it isn't kinked or pinched. My experience is that if the leak is in one of the pressurized lines it will blow lots of fuel out, not just a slow drip when the bike is running, since the system operates at fairly high pressure. Does it only leak when running, or even when sitting?

Best of luck, and hope this helps!

Yes Ken you are probably right. That's my job for this shift break. Douglas the fuel is coming from the vent hose not from any pressurised areas. Looks like you have got to know your bike very intimately.

Thanks

OK, so I had to think for aminute about what "pull it down so much" meant... Do you mean "strip it naked"? grin.gif

I was replacing the fuel filter and dumping the accumulated sediment out of the bottom of the tank prior to a long ride (solo, about 4000 miles). EVERYTHING got checked, and the bike ran purr-fectly every inch of the way in temps ranging from 40 degrees F to over 100. Once you get pst the fear factor, they aren't too bad to work on really.

Hope you got the leak fixed!

I had a gander at my bike as you did recently. Now I understand less about more than I ever cared to. Found out the wire connector from the tank can cause your gas gauge to work very poorly. Happy resoldering of the offending part. You may need a new plate. bncry.gif
