hcmiller92
Anyone know of a link for K bike specs?I guess there are two questions here. I'll answer the first: the last year of the brick GT was 2004. It was only produced for 2003 and 2004. It was really a K1200RS with some add-on plastic and amenities. The K1200RS was built from 1997 through 2004. Link to comment
SinNH
Thanks HCmiller92. Sold my K11 last year, loved the bike, engine, styling, handling and power but couldn't deal with the heat . For me simply not rideable above 75 F. A riding bud has a 01 K1200RS, nice machine, but not comfortable for me. Keeping my eyes peeled for a GT. Miss the K high end power . Steve Link to comment

The K1200RS was built from 1997 through 2004. Actually, there were 2005 model GT's, in Silver, but not US versions. The dif between the RS and GT involves many things. Top end. Electric windshield. Saddle/seat position/handlebars. The saddle was heated, and had more padding. Very different for a pillion. The 2002 and on RS's had adjustable footpegs and bars. The GT had one position, similar to the full back position on the RS and adjustable footpegs. Heated seat, the RS "touring" screen was standard on the GT. The GT came w/saddlebags. The fairing pieces, at the front and by the legs make a noticeable difference if you ride the bikes back to back. Much better protection in cold and wet. Cruise was available on later RS's and was on most GT's. The GT came in solid colors, grey/green, orient blue, and red. The RS was available in many schemes. You could not turn an RS into a GT for anywhere close to the small price difference they sold for. But, there were some GT's sold that had missing amenities. Windscreen, non electric. Some didn't have cruise or heated options. Link to comment

Steve Steve, I have a 2003 K1200GT, and wanted to ask you about the "heat" comment. Were you talking about rider comfort, engine heat, or maybe both? My engine seems especially sensitive to ambient temperature, and I have gone into the red zone in city traffic at 55 degrees Fahrenheit ambient temperature. It's a nagging concern. Thanks! tallman
Rouge, Shouldn't. Are your fans coming on? Have you checked coolant level? If you have fresh coolant, fans are working, check the thermostats. Link to comment
Rogue_Trader
Thanks for the ideas. Both fans come on, but will not pull it down out of the outer reaches of the red zone. Coolant level is ok in both the engine reservoir and the overflow tank (dealer mechanic did suggest making sure the overflow was not TOO full). Checking thermostats sounds like a logical step. K1100's are known for cooking the rider, the fuel tank even with all the reflective insulating tape undercoating, can get too hot to touch ! They have "partitions" at the rearmost part of the fairing and below the tank that are supposed to direct most of the heat out the side vents. My opinion is that just about a third of the engine is exposed and the mill is just simply a high performance hot unit. I loved mine, put on 18k in one three month period, without any real long rides, for me, great preformance and handling. Small fuel tank and only about 38-40 mpg. Really liked working on it, it ran perfect. IMHO, the last of the great looking K's. I would say BMW corrected the heat issue with total enclosure fairings. Just my 1.469 cents. Steve Link to comment
Aluminum_Butt
My engine seems especially sensitive to ambient temperature, and I have gone into the red zone in city traffic at 55 degrees Fahrenheit ambient temperature. I've never seen mine go into the "red", but I will agree that it seems like the thermostat is set to let the engine go really high before the fans kick in. In anything above about 60F ambient, my temp gauge cycles between just over the half mark and just shy of red...especially in traffic. Link to comment

A cheap fix for your problem might be as easy as a new radiator cap. This has been a proven weak point in the GT/RS cooling system. Link to comment
