Rotor
Anyone have experience with these? Info would be appreciated. Link to comment
Doug_TX
I've used them long ago. If your helmet is reasonably quiet they're okay. Not great, but okay. I use ear buds now instead. Those speakers are a tad bulky. When I bought them they were fairly cheap. Don't know what they sell for now. But at the time I had a fairly noisy helmet so I didn't like them a whole lot. Rotor
Thanks for the info and reply. I'm looking for a "quality" set of helmet speakers to listen to XM from my GPS. I don't want a complete intercom/multi device system, just want good music while I ride. I thought by looking at the photo and reading the add that these might be what I wanted...speakers and coil cord. I've looked around a bit and most of what I see looks cheap or requires a more involved system. I have a flip helmet, so it's not all that quiet. I'm definately open for suggestions. Link to comment
smiller
Do you definitely want speakers of would you consider earphones? If you choose the latter correctly then you can get much better fidelity than speakers with good noise isolation as well. The Etymotic ER6i are a popular choice as they provide excellent sound quality along with meaningful noise reduction. The only downside of the ER6i in this application is that they will let you hear what satellite radio really sounds like... but that's another story... Link to comment
Doug_TX
+1 on the ear phones. Much better than the Bass Monsters. Link to comment
Alan D
I've tried helmet speakers, er6i ($89), custom molded in ear plugs ($100 plus) and some sony earbuds from circuit city ($49.00) The er6's and the sonys sound the best. I use the sonys because they don't stick out of my ears as far as the er6s. As I would turn my head a little pressure would be put on the er6's changing the sound. The sonys are comfortable. There are two sony models, for $10 more you get a 3 foot extension cord. These are similar to the ones I use. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-EX51LP-Fontopia-Headphones/dp/B000095SB6/ref=pd_sim_e_title_4 Use a little lubricant from the hearing aid store ($5) or spit (free) before inserting them will make them comfortable for hours. Good luck Link to comment
realshelby
I'm looking for a "quality" set of helmet speakers to listen to XM from my GPS. I'm definately open for suggestions. Sounds like you are using a Zumo? If so bite the bullet and order the cable and headsets from Edsets.com (no affliation!). It plugs into the Zumo mount and has a high quality cord to helmet connection. I cut off the helmet speakers and attached a plug in connection on the side of the helmet to plug my earbuds into. Sure, you can get a good set of earbuds and plug directly into the Zumo. But every time your hand hits the cord or you turn your head it seems like you jerk the cord and the earbuds come loose. Hard to fix going down the road! By plugging them into the connector on the helmet I have yet to have them come loose. I don't even take the cord loose to fuel up. Link to comment
Rotor
Thanks to all that offered information. I'm currently using the sony ear buds and the sound is great. However, I have the same problem described by realshelby, hitting the cord, pulling the buds out, having to work them in everytime I get off the bike, and just irritation after a long ride with them in. It's nice to just put the helmet on, plug in and go. I'm using the Garmin 2730. Don't know if the Edset will work as the 2730 has a 3.5 mm stereo plug (unless there's another plug I didn't notice). The Edset speakers, however, look like they may work out with a little soldering. I'll contact them and see what we can work out. Again, and as always, thanks for taking the time to assist.
