Why we do it??

In a thread I was reading, I saw this post, "Don't we come to these events to ride? Drink when you get back to the hotel. Really it's not that hard."

I'm not downing or flaming the OP here, but the reply got me thinking (yes, I know this is a bad thing!) about why we do it. Why do we ride hundreds sometimes thousands of miles to these events? Is it the ride. Is it the time we spend socializing? Or is it a combination of the two? For me, well it's simple. I come to these events not only for the riding but for the esprit de corps that goes along with it. Riding during the day is great and a lot of fun, but the times with the new friends at night seems to be just as powerful of a draw for me. What say you???

For me.....the allure of seeing new places and riding different roads is what brought me out, BUT......its the people and social aspects that keep me coming back for more.

I'm a strict believer in not riding after I've had a drink. I also know that if I had the choice of

1. Ride to dinner, eat, return to the hotel to socialize and have a few drinks

or

2. Walk to dinner, eat, drink, socialize, and then walk back to contiue the conversations in the parking lot

For me its #2 all the way thumbsup.gif

Then again.....I was one of the guys closing down the bar with James, Roger, and Angel at the UNrally grin.gif

We try to make the trip one that includes as many good roads as feasible. Avoid slab.

The Destination. thumbsup.gif

The Smokies are one of the most beautiful places to hang, to SASTR's.

Great vistas.

We enjoy the friendship and social intercourse. eek.gif

Would we ride to the destination without the event?

Yes, but not at that specific time/place.

Would we ride there if no one else came?

Yes, but there's a different dynamic to solitaire and hold'em.

If no one else showed up, we'd still be there. cool.gif

For every rider that is there, an exponential growth in the social dynamic happens and it has been fun to be a small part of that.

There are many aspects of my trips that bring fulfillment.

  • Trailer owners may disagree with this, but for me, the hardship and adventure of the cross-country ride to get to the playground lends greater weight and meaning to the whole endeavor; it's sort of like the difference between climbing a mountain and taking a helicopter to the summit.
  • Sharing a great ride or two with old and new friends.
  • Hanging out with those same friends at a hotel that's been completely taken over by motorcycles and their owners. Alcohol in moderation is a welcome (but not absolutely critical) part of this particular activity.
  • Exploring new territory solo.

It all depends on where I end up, who's there, what the roads are like, and what Mrs Whip wants to do.

Is there a new experience available to me close by. Like rock climbin in a jeep with Killer as your driver.(Always a fav)...or bungy jumpin(still want to try it)

Maybe helpin people change their tires in Killers garage...very camera worthy!!!!!

Chasin Limecreek all around Gunny for a few days is very worthy.(Phillyflash too.)

Sometimes getting up every mornin, for weeks on end, and knowin you have 500 miles to do before your gonna sleep, is on the agenda.

Sometimes I need a break from the bike and just want to go for a walk and check out the town or hangout.

I can recall goin for a boat ride....

It's all good with me!!!!!

Yep, but without the former, the latter is just a bunch of people standing around a parking lot.

The riding is that long amount of time between shots.

Your little buddy missed you at Cedar Key.

He was acting sheepishly the next morning.
