Whip
After watchin all those National Geographic shows on whales and assorted Alaskan sea life for 40 years I finally understand why people spend their lives takin pictures and studying whales. Words cannot explain my feeling nor will I be able to tell ya how I felt during this part of our trip. I think I'm gonna just post the pix. Mrs Whip, Mr Olson, and I................. My first whale.... That's about it........ ....It was sooooooooooo much fun we went for another boat ride in Valdez......it was even more amazing!!!!!! chrisolson
Through the magic of Whip's bazillion zoom, anti shake, stabalized Nikon lens, you can actually see whales. In real time with just human eyes, they were a bit far away. But, the puffins were close and were great fun. However, all in all, it was a fine, relaxing day on the water - the weather was about perfect, the boat wasn't crowded, the crew was pleasant, the lunch was at least edible and you could go right up and stand behind the captain as she piloted the boat if you wanted !! Bruce H
Nice, very nice! When I was a kid most summer evenings I went to sea in a six foot boat. We would row out to either the bell or whisle bouy(about a mile off). The whales would come up near. I knew they wouldn't eat me, they were Baleen Whales, but I always wondered if they knew I was there. My concern was them surfaceing under my boat. Now that I am older my boat is twice as big, twelve feet, still use oars but also have sail. Link to comment

SEATTLE_RIDER
Great pics Whip and a great adventure! OK, no pics to share, but imagine this: In 1974 I was part of a six-man crew that sailed a C&C 39 Sailboat back from Lahaina Harbor, Maui to Seattle. 17 days, six hours to Neah Bay at the mouth of the Straits. About a week out, just after sunset, a large Gray Whale started following our phospherous trail. Then, she decided to come up and have a look at us. She came alongside the windward side and rolled along with us for about 10 minutes. She was within inches of the hull but never touched us. She was also longer than the boat which means she was over 40'. We could walk forward and look her in the eye. It was magic!! cheers, Link to comment
Whip
Sounds like an amazing experience. I hope to be so lucky some day. Whip Link to comment

Now that's funny! Whip, the blue color in those photos is truly amazing. Thanks for posting. I think that it's perfect for you to make this photo trip last several months now. Just prolongs the awe. awe---noun, verb, awed, aw·ing. –noun 1. an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, etc., produced by that which is grand, sublime, extremely powerful, or the like: in awe of God; in awe of great photos of Alaska. Bill_Walker
Now that's funny! Thanks. I was starting to wonder if I was going to get any reaction at all. I had figured I'd start a whale-related pun-fest with that one. For those that didn't get it (if any): From m-w.com: fluke Function: noun Etymology: perhaps from 1fluke Date: 1561 1 : the part of an anchor that fastens in the ground — see anchor illustration 2 : one of the lobes of a whale's tail Of course I realize the rest of you were just ignoring it because it was a bad pun.
