celebrationrev
Last time I filled up, about two weeks ago, I didn't have the nozzle down far enough into the tank. The gas hit the walls of the well and sprayed all over the top of the bike. I've ridden three times since then (life gets in the way) and during/after each ride I get a strong gas smell. It stinks up the garage for a day or so. Of course I'm worried that I have a gas leak. However, I got no smell prior to that fill-up. Yeah, but it's been two weeks. Wouldn't any spilled gas have long since evaporated? So is there any chance some got down into the air box and the filter? Then why wouldn't it smell all the time? I only notice it when I got off the bike after a ride. Doesn't that suggest a gas leak when the fuel pump is functioning? I am so confused!! Can anybody help me figure this out? Link to comment
Boffin
I had a strong smell of petrol for a while (sounds better than gas, doesn't it? ) which turned out to be the filler cap not fully closed. Andy Link to comment
ElevenFifty
I've also had the filler cap not lock down after a fill up ... It looks closed but unless it clicks shut and locks, vapors will vent. This is a much more likely scenario than the coincidence of a spill occurring at the same time as the failure of a fuel line. Link to comment
celebrationrev
I just checked and the filler cap is latched and snug. Any other thoughts? Link to comment

Craig, there is a water drain hose coming off of bottom of that tank filler neck area.. It doesn’t always run straight back & down.. You might have some gasoline trapped in a high spot of that drain hose yet.. If all you did was splash some gasoline around the upper tank area you sure didn’t permanently hurt anything or damage your fuel system in any way.. Twisty Link to comment
bayne
If You haven't replaced the gas line quick disconnects already, You're past due for them to fail. Remove the right side body work and You can see them just below the tank. The plastic connectors crack with age and allow gas to leak when under pressure. Do a search, and You'll find plenty of posts. Link to comment
Schnell
I'm thinking the canister is full of gas? Now might be a good time to perform the infamous canisterectomy. Instructions can be found on this site - FAQ? Ken Link to comment
