Channa
Ok I have owned my beemer a week tomorrow ..and on a 2003 rt ii50 ...starting to think I may have bought someone elses problems. No fault of the bikes but the battery is on its way out ...I will replace at the weekend. Tonight extremely sluggish when starting so I have given the battery a quick charge Now the brake self test thing the bike does, the light is stopping on. Dont think for a minute there is anything wrong with the brakes no warnings and everthing ok last ride...your thoughts? when she is warm a tut tut ...sound it has been suggested cam chain tensioner a bit noisy . But no detriment. channa Link to comment

The brake system you have on that bike is very critical to battery voltage so your brake warning light problem could be caused by low battery voltage.. Maybe a little more info on the brake warning light problem could tell us more.. Which warning light is the problem? The general warning light or the ABS warning light? philbytx
Channa, the RT is quite sensitive to a bad battery. Try a new battery and use a Battery Tender 24/7 if you don't ride the bike regularly. Cam chain tensioner (LH side) can be noisy but easy to fix. Link to comment
flat_twin
The brake faults are likely being caused by your nearly dead battery as someone already said. See if this problem is cured by a new battery. If possible get an Odyssey battery. I've had far fewer ABS faults with the Odyssey than the previous two batteries. Link to comment
bdspler
DONT WORRIE !!!!! I though all this too! You got a GREAT bike. I have had mine 9 weeks and put 6k on it. its just a diffrent kind of beast! and you will get used to all its quriks. you didnt get some one problems. you will love ur beast in no time. its just a learning curve. i promise! misspelled words= the name bd Link to comment
Boffin
If the brake light is on and not flashing it means a bulb has blown. Both the tail light and the brake light are controlled by the ABS unit so if the tail light fails the brake light is illuminated at low intensity and if the brake light fails the tail light is lit instead. The only way to be sure which has failed is to remove the two knurled nuts in the tail, drop the tail light assembly and look at the bulbs themselves. Andy Link to comment
ESokoloff
remove the two knurled nuts in the tail, drop the tail light assembly I don't remember the size offhand, but a 12 point sock will help in this. When you screw these nuts back on, make sure you get them tight enough (but don't overdo it) lest they back out & the tail light assembly falls out on you. Some have put a rubber band around the two nuts to insure they don't back out. Link to comment
Channa
The guy I bought it off is replacing the battery this weeekend, with no qualms so cant knock that. The bike has been 'laid up @ since October November time if the MOT is a clue. And I thinks it has been optomised occasionally. I will check the blown bulb scenario, that could have well happened connecting and faffing about with the charger. Thank you to everyone for their help, It is appreciated Channa Link to comment
Channa
Well I took thebike yesterday to the fellow I bought it from ..and He fitted a new battery for me. I am glad he did ...all the plastic came off.. apparently it is easier. Anyway the electrical fault on the abs light disappeared so it seems the low voltage of the old battery was the culprit. He also swapped my panniers for me one had a hole which in fairness to him he wouldnt have noticed. Has it happens these are in better condition and have a rflective surface to them in the dark ...but are silver in daylight so i was happy. The 'cam chain tensioner rattle' I can hear is not that at all it is the butterfly vibratingin the fuel system ...apparently a common quirk. So all in all back in love again Andrew Link to comment
flat_twin
Glad to hear the new battery resolved your problems. The right side butterfly on my RT is noisy under certain conditions too. Sounds like your BMW is just as quirky as next one. Link to comment
