Mister Tee
Well, the Tee did it. After sniffing the forums and doing some research for a couple months, I just picked up my 2008 1200RT at the local BMW shop. Coming most recently from a gsxr, I was amazed at how maneuverable the bike is, for it's size. Granted, it feels a bit like riding a lawnmower with it's big opposed twin, but I can actually ride in 40 degree weather without getting frostbite and hypothermia now. I can't wait to get it broken in, so I can take it to the hills and see what it can really do. Link to comment
Mr_Ed
Welcome. How about filling out your profile so that we know who you are and where you're from. Enjoy your new "lawn mower" Link to comment
keithb
Welcome to the the board and congratulations on your new RT. I highly recommend you break it in in the hills. Coming from a GSXR huh? Once you get 600-1000 miles on it start running it fairly hard in the hills to reduce overall oil consumption. You will be amazed at how this bike will run/pull in the hills in 3rd/4th at 5K rpm's or higher. One of the reasons I decided on a RT after my K bike was protection from the weather, along with more upright seating and a no dive front end. The handling on a bike this size is fantastic. By buying the new hexhead you bought a bike that shed 43 lbs. and picked up about 12 h.p. vs. the 1150 RT. This is a great group of people who hang out here. Glad to have you aboard. Link to comment
Mister Tee
I'll work on the profile, and I appreciate the guidance on break in. It looks like there is a lot of good information here to be gained. As for pics, well, I'll work on that too but at least for the moment, it looks exactly like a 2008 RT on the BMW website. I'm not sure how much "Farkelization" as you guys put it I'll do. The very first thing on my list is probably going to be a cylinder protector bar. I damn nearly scraped cylinders last night - I need to get used to the clearance. Link to comment
Silver Surfer/AKAButters
Congrats, and welcome aboard! Link to comment
BruceWA
Welcome to the board! You'll love the RT, but it is NOT a gsxr. You will certainly enjoy the comfort aspect. Link to comment

Mister Tee
I damn nearly scraped cylinders last night - I need to get used to the clearance. Yep... it's not a Gixxer! What made you decide to change to an RT? 1. My commute can be up to 200 miles a day. 2. It doesn't get real cold in the Greater Sacramento area and the SF Bay Area but 33 degrees and fog make for a very uncomfortable ride. 3. The Tee's back doesn't handle the forward riding position as well as it used to. I mean don't get me wrong, I love sportbikes, but I need something that I can ride on all day and not be worn out. If I do a 500 mile day on the gix, my wrists, arms, back, rear, and knees ache for a whole day. On the other hand, I don't want a complete touring bike either. I guess I could have gone with an ST1300 or an FJR, but having ridden all three the BMW was the way to go. Plus, I've seen plenty of novice sportbike riders get their ass handed to them by CHP motor cops. I may just keep the gix as a track only bike, but on the other hand I don't want to store, maintain and insure two bikes. I fly aerobatic airplanes too, so it's not like I don't have other outlets for my extreme adrenaline addiction. Link to comment
outpost22
Be sure and get the blade sharpened on your RT mower before spring. and welcome! (What part of No. Cal. are you in?) Link to comment

keithb
I for one, just love to watch novice sport bike riders get their ass handed to them by anyone!! I have some friends in their late 50's and early 60's that can ride circles around A LOT of riders. Link to comment

Welcome to California. Wherever you are, you're at least 100 miles away from where you need to be. Heck, a drive across town is 100 klicks! Link to comment
TedG
I may just keep the gix as a track only bike, but on the other hand I don't want to store, maintain and insure two bikes. That is what I do...the extra insurance money is not too bad, the real problem is a tiny garage and a wife who thinks garages are meant for storing stuff we'll never use again. Makes for, um, animated discussions. Now that I'm only doing a few track days per year, I am thinking of selling the GSXR...probably need to think about it for another year or two, though Link to comment

Quinn
I made the suggestion years ago that we put a set of scales on th front porch. If you bring in ten pounds of stuff, you have to throw out ten pounds of stuff. Our house has been gaining weight since we moved in. Time to put it on a diet. Needless to say, I was stupid, sarcastic, and just plain mean. As usual. Link to comment
Mdcruiser
Hearty congratulations, and welcome! My inaugural ride on my RT was in your neck of the woods (from Las Vegas down to Yuma, then over to Mendocino), soooo... why not come on over here for your big '08 ride! Eastern Shore, ocean water you can actually swim in, Blue Ridge Pkwy, etc. This bike is about long-distance discovery! Link to comment
