GaryB
Well, after 9 months of searching I’ve finally managed to obtain a second-hand set of BMW Authority Protection Bars for my 2004 R1150RT. I got them from Motorworks here in the UK for about £400, a saving of at least £1500 over a new set, although there are a few scrapes and rusty areas but I can live with those. I also picked up a use Radio telephone box for £70 - £700 plus new - and had it painted to match the bike. The installation of the RT box was easy enough but decided that installing the bars was another matter and got Motorrad Central in Dalkeith to do the job – for a fee, of course! Overall I’m very pleased with the result. In the process of installing a pair of Radiant LED lights on the front bars. These are the same type of lights used in the Police version R1150RT-p and R1200RT-P. Hope to post video clips and images soon. Gary www.r1150rt.org Link to comment

Wow, those protection bars are spendy. I know I already had someone ask to buy mine, but I had no idea that they were going for that much. Definately post pics when you get them installed. upflying
If the part is related to authority use, it will be very expensive. BMW figures the taxpayer is footing the bill and no one will notice. Link to comment
notacop
Congratulations on making your bike 30 some pound heavier. Or is that about 6 stones in the UK? I like the look of them on the bike but prefer the added lightness of removing them. May they save your mirrors and sidecases in the eventuality of a fall over. The lack of bars on mine didn't. Now I have a fully broken in bike. Link to comment
Mike_Rathjen
Wow, those protection bars are spendy. I know I already had someone ask to buy mine, but I had no idea that they were going for that much. That was me. I eventually bought a rear set from a salvage yard for $275 and a front set from Ebay for $190. Strangely enough, the bars seem really lightweight, especially the front bars. Light almost to the point that I wonder if they would really help much. I really doubt they are 30 lbs. Maybe I bought some chromed plastic knockoffs... Link to comment
GaryB
The bars themselves are not that heavy, it's the massive sub-frame under the fairing that adds all the weight. Must say I did not notice any difference when riding. I should have the LED lights installed by this weekend as I'm busy painting the brackets at the moment. f86sabre
Looks nice Gary. Did you cyt that mat that installed in the call box or is that a bought item? Link to comment
GaryB
Looks nice Gary. Did you cyt that mat that installed in the call box or is that a bought item? The mat inside the RT box is cut from a cheap rubber car mat bought at the local car accessory shop for a few pounds. I made a template by installing a sheet of card inside the RT box, drawing round the holes, etc, and then transferring the template to the the mat for cutting. Makes a nice neat job of covering up all the holes, etc, in the base of the box. Also easy to access for maintenance and servicing. Gary www.r1150rt.org Link to comment
notacop
The 30 pounds I measured on my highly accurate bathroom scale was holding all the chrome and bits of plate I removed fron the radio box and rear light plate etc. I don't know where to cut from the front to get rid of the extra metal that isn't on the regular RT. But at 600+ lbs, would I notice? I had left the antennae mount on to serve as a coffe mug rest until I tried to remove my nose on it getting up from a tire pressure check. Then I added more lightness. What I like is the overall look of the package. It just seems right for that Sthport Touring we like to do! The important thing is get your ride exactly as you wish and stand apart from all the rest! Link to comment

Gordon R
The bars really look great on your bike. They do a good job protecting the plastic in a stationary tip over. They will bend back if you hit something going forward so be aware that they are sticking out there. Gordon 2000 RTP-CHP Link to comment
BernardP
Looks good on a non enforcement coloured bike. I have left the bars on my R1150RT-P though I did the dual seat conversion. My bike is still white and with driving lights over the mirrors and on the crash bars it looks quite like it is still "on duty". In June 2006 some 75 x-RT-P's were auctioned in Melbourne Australia (mine one of them). As a result many, many radio boxes and most definately crash bars would have ended up in a rubbish skip.
