agingb1ker
Hi there I have an issue with my BMW R1150RT, I was travelling home from work this evening and as I approched a junction I changed down from 6th to 5th to 4th and that was it, it would not change down anymore. It felt like I was in 1st but the digital readout said 4 and I had to slip the clutch to move to a safe position. I could not get the bike to go in to 1st and had to have it recovered by the auto club (The AA to us brits). Have any of you Knights of the road had the same or similar problem & what as the solution. With thanks in advance. Link to comment
realshelby
First thing to check is the shift linkage for any loose parts. The part that goes on the transmission shaft is a likely culprit. The lever the foot operates has a separate shaft it rides on that may have loose parts also. Sounds like the clutch is operating properly. Beyond the linkage It is likely internal transmission problems Link to comment
Boffin
It certainly sounds like a loose pinch bolt on the gearchange linkage. The big gearbox problems on the RT are failed input splines, which leaves no drive, and gear selector fork wear. The latter is normally only seen on the early 1100s, so is less likely to be your problem. Andy. PS - Welcome to the board Link to comment
steve404
Good luck. I got stuck in 4th on one cold and rainy night. The last time that gearbox worked was when I feathered the clutch while in 4th to get it up on a truck bed. Link to comment
ianboydsnr
It happened to me, on my R1100rt, it was the rear allen bolt, that is two position, to adjust the gear linkage Link to comment
outpost22
Like others have said, check the linkage first. Mine did that and I was stuck in first gear. It was the linkage. Been fine since I adjusted it. Link to comment
duckbubbles
Like others have said, check the linkage first. Mine did that and I was stuck in first gear. It was the linkage. Been fine since I adjusted it. And maybe some lubrication of all the pivot points and shafts. A friend of mine had his R12GS in the shop for a very similar problem and the basic fix was lubrication.
