Setting Sag

The sag adjustment on the spring preload is the first adj. you would do with a new spring on the bike. It is the amount of preload required to achieve correct ride height of the bike with NO load. IE; full tank of gas and no rider or luggage on the bike. This only needs to be done if you put on diferent springs and or shocks. The stock springs 'sag' is set by the factory and is basicly the '0' preload position. Hope this helps. Clear as mud.

Which sag are you referring to? Static or Rider/Dynamic?

To save some time, I am just going to post a link for referencing some "suspension 101" terms and basics so you can start to wrap yourself around the subject.

The start point to any good suspension set up is to start with good shocks. Not going into another debate about the stock shocks but, I will say that it is the first thing that gets changed on almost every bike I have owned. One reason is that I weigh a touch over 200 pounds without gear and that puts the stock spring (set for approximately a 180 pound rider) incorrect for me.

The next thing is to understand the terminology.

Next is to get your quality suspension delivered with the correct spring. This is based on a discussion with your ordering supplier.

Once installed, it is time to get started. The attached links should help and a search of suspension on this board will reveal quite a few threads discussing this topic.

Even with the stock suspension, a noticeable improvement can be attained with a small investment of time. Prolly a couple hours tops!

Typically, you are looking for approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of your total suspension travel to be used when measuring rider/dynamic sag.

Most important thing is to take notes so that you can return to stock settings when you get lost on what you have done.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted and we'll get you rolling!! thumbsup.gifthumbsup.gif

How does one set the sag on on 2007RT? Or is this something I don't need to worry about?

Is my 05-R12RT unique? There is no adjustment available on my front shock. No preload, no rebound, and no compression. Sag adjustment requires replacement of the front shock assembly with one that can be adjusted. frown.gif

I have adjusted the sag on the rear shock with the provided preload adjuster under the seat. thumbsup.gif

The Ohlins website has some great references for setting up your suspension. I haven't looked for it lately though.

Good Luck,
