Battery Tender Junior

Recommended Posts

I purchased a Battery Tender Junior because I believed, from many posts on this forum, it would work fine with my 05 RT. I intend to connect it directly to the battery.

I read the directions that came with the charger and it says "Use Battery Tender Junior and Plus Chargers for charging lead-acid batteries only". It goes on to say that it is not to be used with dry-cell batteries but it is OK to use with absorbed glass mat batteries.

So... can I use this charger on my battery? Thanks folks.

I just purchased an '08 R12RT and was told I need a certain kind of charger for the CANBUS system if I want to charge using the accessory outlet. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

Two options:

1)Wire the Battery Tender lead direct to the battery as the original poster is doing.

2)Get a Powerlet iCan canbus replacement lead for your socket, basically it turns it back to a direct wire socket so you can use Battery Tender or similar charger,as well as providing power to heavy draw items such as a heated jacket.

Several lengths available,so you can wire the underseat socket or the front fairing socket.

third option, bmw sell a lovely little lead with croc clips on one end and an accessory socket on the other. lift your seat connect up and its done.

fouth option, buy a charger with croc clips and do the above without the lead

the lead is useful for those of us that have the excellent but none canbus chargers from bmw

my dealer thinks all the treads on this subject are hilarious - why does connecting to a battery have to made so complicated? once again, lift the seat.....

Am I hearing that there is a problem with plugging heated clothing into the BMW outlet that the bike comes with, or am I mis-understanding something. I thought that's what the outlets were there for.

The ST will shut off after 5 amps and the RT can handle up to 10. So, if your gear pulls more than that, you'll need some other solution to get power to the heated gear.

It's not that tough honestly. When I first had my heated jacket on my bike, it took me under 10 minutes to put the adapter on the battery.

I bought my ST with 2K on a cold day. Plugged in my heated jacket and road about 45 minutes. Stopped to check a map. Bike would not start. Needed to be jumped. I had already ordered the PowerLet. Installed the following day. 7K later, no problem at all... I use a Battery Tender Junior. What does it really do? Not sure, but the light does turn red to green a few minutes after I plug it in....Buy the PowerLet and by-pass the CanBus. Steve C NJ
