Froy
My first post! VERY NICE forum! My dealer have a DEMO'07 with all the extras I'm after exept the TPM and ASC. He claims however that it is way too expensive to install these options post factory. What are your opinion on this? Isn't the ASC just a plug in module or an exisisting module with built in ASC? Same with TPM; The rim sensors could off course be installed post factory, but how about the receiver that's picking up the sensor readings? Anyone tried to do this? Link to comment
motoguy128
In theory thsi shold be easy ot install. The ASC would just be 1 additonal button (Optional and pointless IMO) and a reflash of the ECU firmware. The TPM would require the wheel sensors and a re-flash of the ECU. However, word on the street is that BMW is not offereing any of these as kits. So your only recourse would be to install the parts yourself from "donor" bikes or parts off e-bay or fropm the boneyard. Then pay the dealer to re-flash the ECU. You'd have no warrantly on the parts you install. That being said, there may be a different wiring harness and/or ECU module required for these since the TPM would have 2 additonal "inputs" to the ECU. IT might not be as simple as stated above. Honestly, I would just get the bike if it's a good deal. The TPM is nice to and a valuable safety feature, but there are good aftermarket units available. The ASC is a nice additonal, but ultimately it's bundled with other options. I wouldn't pay extra for it. It does NOTHING UNDER 20mph which is where you need it most (launch control). I've only gotten it to kick in on gravel roads in 2nd or 3rd gear at 30+mph by intentionally trying to spin up the rear wheel. It works quite well in that situation and very smoothly cuts the power. So if your want maximum acceleration on gravel roads over 20mph on your RT... it's a must have.! Although you probably should have gotten a GS. Link to comment

I pictured the ASC to mainly enhance stability at launch! Forgot to mention that it is a Sand Beige RT. with 1100 miles. Maybe I'll wait until spring and get an '08 with all the extras I want since biker season has gone into its dreaming state until april next year at my place.. Link to comment

Not sure if ASC is that simple or not, but the TPM actually requires the Alarm control unit in addition to the wheel sensors and ECU re-flash. There are two control units available (according to the fiche), one that does both alarm and TPM, or one that is TPM only. I just added a BMW heated seat as a non-factory option. The dealer had indicated when I bought the bike that this was probably cost prohibitive. It ended up being easier than expected ... the wiring harness was already there, so I just needed to replace the right hand switchgear (to the tune of $230), add the seat (which was right around $300), and pick up a short pigtail cable to connect the seat to the harness. The only reason I did this, is that I'm having Russell rebuild a seat for me, and that the heated option would be good long term ... and I needed to pick up a new seat pan anyway. It all depends on how much you really want to add a factory option after the fact. Link to comment
