Windshield Motor Broken

Some joker tipped my bike over last night. Valve covers did their job so I only lost the right mirror, but it fell right into my truck and the windshield put a nice long scratch into it, and was bent against it when I found it this morning. Now the windshield has a bunch of play...while the motor works fine, the plastic flops back and forth several inches when you push it.

Any ideas how to fix this? I'm going to buy a webcam today too...happens again and I'll know who did it next time. *pissed*

Sounds like the windshield mechanism mounting bracket is broken. It's part # 9 in this diagram, called the "base carrier".

To get to it, you need to remove the nose fairing. Remove the mirrors & side tupperware panels. Remove the windshield. Remove the dash panel (just a bunch of screws around the perimeter). There's some screws that hold the nose cone on, and it slides onto a couple of brass pins. Roll the windshield all the way up or down so it's in a known position. Mark how all the moving parts are lined up so you can put everything back together the same way. The moving parts of the mechanism pretty much come off the base carrier as one unit, but if you don't get everything oriented onto the new one the same way it was on the old one, you'll spend a lot of time adjusting and readjusting the windshield travel. (A trick - loosen the cover (#16) over the gear mechanism and you can move the mounting arms up and down to get them to where the motor and limit switches think they are).

This is about a 2-wrench job on a scale of 1 to 5. The trickiest part is getting the nose fairing aligned with the brass mounting pins when you're putting it back together.

FWIW I busted my right side pivot point (on part no. 9 above) doing the same thing. Repaired it by bolting a copper pipe saddle over it.

Cheers,

wow so I am not the only one riding around with a "field repaired" mount...I used a couple of washers and a bolt to keep the two pieces which broke apart together, and some wire ties. I am sure your effort was more professional but need it only to last long enough until a snowy day and I can replace it with the new mount I got from the dealer for $60. If you've pictures of this "copper pipe saddle" repair, it'd be great if you posted it. tia.

The bottom bolt is the original. I drilled the plastic and installed the top bolt. Can't remember now if the saddle is 3/4" or 1"

Cheers,
