scottd Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Looks good. I'm glad to see a chain. Never really liked a belt, particularly offroad.
sgendler Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Hey look. BMW finally made a bike I want again! AND its a GS that isn't (as) ugly. --sam
John in VA Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Very cool. That bike screams FUN to me! I'd like to see it in a metallic deep green.
EffBee Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Very cool. That bike screams FUN to me! I'd like to see it in a metallic deep green. Uh-oh. A Boston Green F800GS? must. . . . . resist. . . .
rkd Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 I'm personally a little more interested in the F650GS twin (if such a bike really exists), per this image: Sure, a little less steam under the hood, but tubeless tires, probably same tank size with better economy, more reasonable price (oops what was I thinking, it's still got the roundel). Bolt on some Givi Bags and ABS, and I could imagine it my garage. Better yet give back the 150cc's and the rubber-band drive, put the muffler down below full-sized bags and sell it to me as a F800R - that's what I'd really want.
Todd_Z1 Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 It sure looks a lot like the R1200GS to me, just not a big. Cheers!
blkvelvt Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Real upside down forks? Chain drive? No final drive?.... What are we going to bitch about?
OoPEZoO Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Real upside down forks? Chain drive? No final drive?.... What are we going to bitch about? We'll find something I'm starting a list with Not enough wind protection The alternator can't handle 15 farkles It weighs too much compared to the F650GS It doesn't have enough power compared to the R1200GS Actually, I'm just trying to convince myself I don't need one
HappyMan Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Do we know that this bike is for real or is it just a concept? Do we know the dry weight of it? Seat height? Will they make an Adventure with spoked wheels? I've been waiting for this to happen. I'm planning on a KTM 990 and I was hoping this would come out first. Not that it will change my mind but I wanted the choice.
sgendler Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 It sure looks a lot like the R1200GS to me, just not a big. Cheers! smaller/lighter, chain drive, no cylinder heads sticking out the side, trellis frame, stock wire wheels (tubeless, I assume), single seat. Aside from the name and the beak, I don't see a whole lot of similarities. It probably has BMW turn signals, I suppose. --sam
Bill Neander Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 I read on Adventure Rider that there was supposed to be four models. 1) A basic F800GS; 2) a Dakar model with a little more suspension travel; 3) An HP version with super trick suspension and light weight everything; and 4) A white model to commemorate the original 800GS with a huge gas tank. The first picture might be 2) and the second picture might be 1).
DaveC Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 I have seen about as many F800GS sitings on the web as the National Enquirer has seen of Elvis. "If" this is the real F800GS, I would have to say I prefer the styling of my F650GS better. Although this bike would have more power and a smoother engine.

eakins Posted November 1, 2007 Author Posted November 1, 2007 Looks good. I'm glad to see a chain. Never really liked a belt, particularly offroad. aw yeah. i'm real interested because it has a chain and quality suspension. no FD crap and gear ratio changes can be made for serious colorado adventure rides. you asphalt queens and flat-landers need not apply.
OoPEZoO Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 I know its personal preference, but I think that bike just looks awesome. I WILL be test riding one as soon as I can!
fourteenfour Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 Real upside down forks? Chain drive? No final drive?.... What are we going to bitch about? colors? mostly which color will be faster I suppose
beemerman2k Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 Nah, I'm still waiting for the 167hp K1200GS
ghaverkamp Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 Nah, I'm still waiting for the 167hp K1200GS A model targeted at the trench digging community.
rtpitt Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 Or did you mean the do-it yourself GRAVE digging community.
Jeff98362 Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 Wow, it looks like one could actually get to the oil filter and drain plug without disassembling the bike first. What a breakthrough!
velomoto Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Bill, thanks for posting the great pic's - I'd have been much more impressed if the road cornering pic had a stream of sparks coming off the inside footpeg!

From a twin? My F650 just took me on a 5000 mile adventure. Average gas mileage was 73-75 mpg. Do you really think a twin could do that?
Firefight911 Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Better economy? From a twin? My F650 just took me on a 5000 mile adventure. Average gas mileage was 73-75 mpg. Do you really think a twin could do that? My wife's F800ST is averaging around 60mpg! A sleeved down to 650 could very well see those numbers!
Firefight911 Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Here's some more news: BMW will be uncovering some very exciting new bikes at this year’s IMS shows, starting with the San Mateo, CA event on November 16. The much anticipated F 800 GS, the Enduro version of the highly praised and popular F 800 series which just made its global debut at the Milan EICMA show, will be shown for the very first time in North America. Also look for the newly updated top-selling R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure bikes for the 2008 model year with restyled body design, 5% increase in engine power, higher redline and optional Enduro ESA. In addition, you can finally see the two hot new HP bikes in person, the HP2 Sport and HP2 Megamoto. The HP2 Sport recently made an excellent showing at the European endurance races and of course the HP2 Megamoto grabbed podium finishes at this year’s iconic Pike’s Peak hill climb races in Colorado Springs, CO. But wait there is more, for all you guys who love dirt we have the new G 450 X racing dirt bike to ogle over. The G 450 X made its GNCC debut at Crawfordsville, IN on October 27.
RTme2 Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 A model targeted at the trench digging community. LOL

rkd Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Sure, a little less steam under the hood, but tubeless tires, probably same tank size with better economy ... Better economy? From a twin? My F650 just took me on a 5000 mile adventure. Average gas mileage was 73-75 mpg. Do you really think a twin could do that? I was comparing it against the F800GS, specs-unseen. Mainly what I was trying to express is a personal interest in a low-frills, utilitarian, function over form, low-cost-per-mile bike, shades of the original R75 / R80 series. The kind of bike that originally attracted me into motorcycle riding and BMWs in particular - a design philosophy that BMW can't sell anymore I guess.
DancingFool Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 What's the word on the MSRP for the 800GS?
Firefight911 Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 What's the word on the MSRP for the 800GS? As borrowed from ADV. A poster who already bought one! Base price is set (for now... let's hope the dollar doesn't sink any lower against the Euro) at $10,200 US. Convience package (heated grips, trip computer $475, ABS option, center stand option and freight bring the package to just north of $12,000 US (12K and change). Bike's scheduled to be at dealers by March 2008
velomoto Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 ... let's hope the dollar doesn't sink any lower against the Euro In the words of our infamous commander in chief we're gonna "Stay the course!" Fortunately BMW doesn't seem to adjust prices with every change in the dollar or euro.
Heck Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Bike's scheduled to be at dealers by March 2008 So does that mean you have til March to sell the ST??
LuckyLeif Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 There is a nice comprehensive write up (10 pages) that contrasts the 2 800cc GS found at: http://www.rubbermag.com/news/0711/071106_06.html It reads like a direct copy of the marketing dept package for magazine testers, so bear that caveat in mind. Interesting that the "650" GS in reality displaces 800 cc. Looks like shorter-legged riders will have another choice of BMW. Scott
eakins Posted November 8, 2007 Author Posted November 8, 2007 What's the word on the MSRP for the 800GS? http://www.bmwmoa.org/features/new_milan07.htm?pg=price $10,520
Paul Mihalka Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 What's the word on the MSRP for the 800GS? http://www.bmwmoa.org/features/new_milan07.htm?pg=price $10,520 About $12.500 loaded.
Troper3 Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 I think it is the perfect GS Light Powerful and good looking. My moneys on one! YAHOO!
velomoto Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 http://www.bmwmoa.org/features/new_milan07.htm?pg=price $10,520 About $12.500 loaded. Looking at the pricing of the R12GS/12GSA, I'd expect the 800GSA to land right about $12.5 as well...
marcopolo Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Someone over at ADVRider has just posted the 2008 BMW Canada suggested retail prices. The F800GS is $12,250 CDN. The F650GS-Twin is $8990. The prices of other models have come down as compared to 2007 prices. The R12RT base price is now $19,000 vs. $21,500. This presumably reflects the strong Canadian dollar, and the outcry of consumers who felt they were getting screwed by distributors (not retailers).
philbytx Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Here's the Bikezone review of the F800GS. Looks like a nice package......
TNT Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 OK, I like it! But what is the low low seat hight in inches? Any know? - - - -
SpaceKing Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 33.5 inches Are you sure about that? That's way higher than the 1200 low seat and I find that hard to believe. Where are those specs? thanks b
marcopolo Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 33.5 inches Are you sure about that? That's way higher than the 1200 low seat and I find that hard to believe. Where are those specs? thanks b BMW's international website says seat height is 880mm, with the low seat 850mm. Assuming the website is correct, the low seat is indeed 33.5 inches. http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/com/en/index.html
Tippy Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 What I really want to see is an 800Rt with outstanding faring protection, low seat height (29") and high alternator output. I would take one in an instant
camille Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 I went to the motorcycle show in San Mateo on Sunday. The F800GS looked great except for the color. And here are the details: My daughter looked good on a nitro-fueled Yamaha!
