imeyers Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Well I live on Long Island and the last BMW dealer on the island has been siezed by New York State for failure to pay taxes. Glad my bike is not in there, I actually know someone who's 1150RT is stuck in there for now. Being that the only dealer left to bring the bike to is in Manhattan and I refuse to ride a motorcycle in Manhattan I think it may be time for the bike to go. What do you guys think. I am eyeing the Concours14 from Kawasaki. My bike is an 05 with 3600 miles on it with large trunk, nav, esa, heated seats, inner bags for all 3 hard cases and the BMW tank bag, and a brand new set of 2 week old PIAA 1100X's mounted in the fairing, and indoor and outdoor BMW covers. Anyone interested? I really dont want to get rid of the bike because I love it but I won't ride in Manhattan.
BeemerLover Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Stay away from the C14 Concours for now. Wait until they get the bugs wrung out of it. I test drove one and heat management is a real problem. Lots of comments on their forum. Gael.
10ovr Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 I know a lot of people that love there FJR's,,Cant go wrong with a Yamaha,,Is the Yamaha dealer up on there taxes
used2jeep Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Sounds like you will be learning to do more of your own service to me. Silver lining you know...
Islipfd Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 As a fellow L.I. I feel your pain about not having a dealer. I ones we had were on the low end of service ladder anyway. Many of the LIBMWRC go to N.J. or Conn. for major service. Basic work is done in house or ex bmw mech. with own shop. With 3600 miles in three years your service needs would be lite. Last dealer was in Valley Steam and lost his dealership from BMW last year. He was flooded out two weeks ago and in need of new floors last I heard. If NYS shut him down it is news to me. Ride more and hope BMW gets is head out of the sand when it comes to who should be dealers. Service = Sales + loc, loc, loc.
Exploreinman Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 See the glass half full, at least you have a dealer close by. I travel 140 miles to get to my dealer. I can understand not wanting to ride in Manhattan. How bad is it early on a Saturday morning?
motoguy128 Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Keep it. I have a 100 mile trip to my dealer. Find another. I only ride about 6000 miles per year, so for me it's a annual trip. Not a big deal. I can scheduel an appointment a few weeks out and show up early Sat. and ride off later that day. I usually have my wife follow me up and we go shopping while we're waiting. Next time i might see if I can borrow a bike instead if the weather is good.
Tapatio Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 BMW dealer on the island has been siezed by New York State for failure to pay taxes Sounds like a perfect opportunity to open up a dealership! That way you can keep your bike and save $$$ on repairs.
grayghost Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I'm on BMW Manhattan's email list, (I inquired about a bike they had for sale), and just recieved an email about a winter storage deal. The email said they'd pick up and deliver your bike free within a 50 mile radius. I don't know if this is just for the winter storage deal or regular service. Have you contacted them? It may be a little bit of a ride but riding in NYC isn't much different than riding in any other city, (the idiot's in 4 wheelers are the same, just the location is changed). Not that I ride into the city on a regular basis, my biggest concern is finding a mechanic who know's what he's doing. The last dealer in northern NJ went out of business, before that everytime I took my LT their they could never reconnect the autocom. (wonder why they went out of business?).
Angel Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Keep it, Your misfortune is simply another excuse for longer rides. Seriously, if you really love the bike, attend some Tech Day sessions and learn how to wrench on your bike (basics). Not brave enough? see how easy it is... do as search on this board for the maintenance DVD... good luck
sjn7708 Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 sure u cant get the manhattan dealer to pick up and deliver? my dealer is 100 miles away and will pick up and or deliver if need be.
AdventurePoser Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Aaargh....that pounds sand! Still, you are a low mileage rider. Maybe you could learn to do some of your own tech work. In fact, you could sponsor a Tech Day and gain plenty of knowledge from the Mechanically Gifted here on the Board. Good luck, my friend. Steve in So Cal
LuckyLeif Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 ...I really dont want to get rid of the bike because I love it but I won't ride in Manhattan. Been a while since I lived in Lawn Guyland, but there used to be ferries out of Port Jeff and Orient Point. Should work if you wanted to wait during service at Conn or NY dealerships. I'm somewhat aware of the service issues in NY shops, as I know a guy who lives in the city but rides his bike 4 hours to Bob's in MD for the big service jobs.
