E30TECH Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 I got my set of PIAAs along with the 5NCY Autoswitch. I wanted to use a 3mm LED rather than the 5mm that it comes with. Since I don't know much about LEDs, I was wondering which type I would need since there are many different voltage and current options. Thanks
Fugu Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Check what the autoswitch is sending the LED with your DMM, that will tell you a lot. Why do you want to swap LEDs? The ones that come with work pretty well, but off axis brightness is not great. Not so sure a smaller LED would not be a greater problem to see in daylight based on the visibility of mine, which are even shaded by my farkle shelf. BTW, you will want to hook the autoswitch up for testing before permanent install. I foolishly installed both of mine, trimmed the wires to length for the connections, loomed everything pretty, and THEN discovered one would turn on but not shut off. Cycle Gadgets would have preferred I had not cut all the leads since I had to return it. They took it back anyhow, but it was a hassle for them, and a hassle for me to re-do the install.
E30TECH Posted October 24, 2007 Author Posted October 24, 2007 I'd like a smaller LED as to where I want to mount it. I'm thinking of putting it above the turn signal cancel button by drilling a hole and mounting it from behind. I didn't want to use such a big LED. Thanks for the info
Fugu Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 THat's where the LED that comes with the switches was mounted on my GS. Looked great, didn't work for crap in the daylight. YMMV, but I'd tape it there first and live with it for a while before making it permanent. It will be hard to get the axis of the LED right so it's daylight visible putting it by the cancel button. Seems like what's needed is an LED with a lens that refracts the light so it's more visible off axis.
Sidmariner Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 I picked up LEDs in the colour I wanted from a local electronic supply outfit. They also provided me with the correct resistor to step down to the voltage required for the LED. In the picture you can see my placement of the Autoswitch (Moto-Light), Auxiliary Light, and alarm system LED right beside the photo-cell for the Kisan headlight modulator. Location of my RT LEDs and Kisan daylight sensor: Close Up, alignment is off but I don't feel so bad since I didn't make a mess in the instrument panel. I can replace the radio display blanking plate for a few dollars or for a piece of scrap plastic. LEDs on K1100LT blank switch beside actual switch. Daylight sensor for headlight modulator.
pedro cerveza Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Why not go to the horse's mouth? Call Raul at Autoswitch... (305) 471-9508. He's a great guy to work with.
