Tihany to Budapest, Hungary (80 miles)

We loaded up in the morning to a nice day and an audience of the hotel staff and a few guests…..apparently motorcycle riders and/or motorcycles are interesting….

We rode a few miles around the shore of Lake Balaton and then looped back into town for a tour of the Abbey Church and Benedictine Abbey Museum next door.

Then we were off through the Hungarian countryside enjoying a beautiful day and staying off the motorway for most of the journey. You are supposed to purchase a sticker (Vignette) to ride on the motorway outside Budapest, but as we later found out the bike specific ones are not available at gas stations, so we never did get one…

Arriving at the hotel in Budapest we unloaded the bike and headed for downtown as is was still quite early and there was much to see. My father was born in Budapest but the family left for Australia when he was very young, and as bonus he and my brother had flown in to meet us. We were anxious to see them and hear what my father had to say as this was his first visit back after over 60 years. He has also been in contact with some of our extended family and plans were made to have dinner with them the following evening. I will let the photos speak for themselves, I found Budapest to be a beautiful city and very much enjoyed the extra day we added to our visit as it allowed us to see many of the sights. It should also be noted that the Danube River was flooding due to some early snow in Austria that has melted soon after it fell. Behind the Parliament House one of the main roads was completely underwater….something the GPS had a hard time accepting….The public baths were also a highlight, we went to the Széchenyi baths http://www.spasbudapest.com/furdo.php?idx=14&menu=8 and I would highly recommend spending a few hours there as it really was nice to relax and enjoy the warm waters.
