Rocket_Cowboy Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 I had posted in the Russell feedback thread that I've got a ride-in appointment set with Russell for Nov 29th. Instead of flying into San Francisco, renting a bike, and then riding up to Redding, I've decided to just ride the whole way up and back ... the better to test out the set, as well as the fuel cell I've added to the bike. With all that said, I've got three days to get up Redding from Dallas ... more if I tap into the previous weekend. I'm thinking about making a stop in So Cal, maybe one again in No Cal, and I could probably do one in Arizona along the way. The catch is, if I'm to be in Redding on Thursday, most of the stops would be Monday-Wednesday, so not the most convenient for work schedules. I know a couple people I'd like to stop and see if they are free ... Tom in AZ, Jamie and Leslie and Steve in So Cal, and maybe Michael (I know you're in Nevada, not so much No Cal) and any of the No Cal gang that I've not met at either Torrey or the HCR. If I'm in Redding/Lake Shasta on the 29th, that would put me in AZ on the 26th, So Cal on the 27th, and No Cal on the 28th. Anyone interested in meeting up for dinner along the way?
Firefight911 Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Haven't seen ya since HCR. You are more the welcome to use the spare bedroom in the Placerville, CA area on the night of the 28th if ya like!
Rocket_Cowboy Posted October 23, 2007 Author Posted October 23, 2007 Might just take you up on that Phil. It's been way to long.
Firefight911 Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Might just take you up on that Phil. It's been way to long. I'll add that we could have Sunday night as a meet and greet at our place!!! Order pizza, BBQ, or something. Plenty of BMWSTers up here!
azkaisr Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Mi Casa Su Casa man. I will PM ya some info on how to get a hold of me. Tom
skinny_tom (aka boney) Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Might just take you up on that Phil. It's been way to long. I'll add that we could have Sunday night as a meet and greet at our place!!! Order pizza, BBQ, or something. Plenty of BMWSTers up here! Why does everyone come through on the days that I'm working?! Also, what are your plans afterward?
Cheechoo Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 I hope you're not doing it this way because you believe that you will somehow get a better saddle. I sent a picture of myself on the bike and they did a great job. From what I understand, nothing different will be done simply because you rode in. On the other hand, we have plenty of room in Foster City, CA if you find yourself passing up the San Francisco peninsula. You are more than welcome to be our guest...you get your own room, bathroom, and professionally brewed espresso drinks. (Oh, we usually have other beverages available as well.)
bakerzdosen Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Might just take you up on that Phil. It's been way to long. WARNING: If you go, stay away from the dogs. If not, you cannot blame me if you decide you want some.
BeniciaRT_GT Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Like the others, feel free to stay with me also!!! I'm off from the 28th through the 2nd. I'm just NE of San Francisco and have plenty of room and don't have the kind of cute dog that you will want to steal, (although she might steal your heart.) PM sent... Let me know. I might even be able to ride around a bit with you. Edit: I'm about 2.5 hours (ALL interstate) or longer (on some great roads) away from Redding...
Rocket_Cowboy Posted October 23, 2007 Author Posted October 23, 2007 Why does everyone come through on the days that I'm working?! Also, what are your plans afterward? Well ... the seat build is Thursday, and I need to be back at work on Monday. I was tentatively planning to meander up to Redding, then iron butt it back home Friday/Saturday, but could spend a little time in No Cal before I haul for home.

You are more than welcome to be our guest...you get your own room, bathroom, and professionally brewed espresso drinks. (Oh, we usually have other beverages available as well.) Well ... part of the reason for the ride-in is that I've added a BLM aux fuel tank to the pillion seat, so Russell is doing some custom covering over the rear seat pan to make it look stock. There needs to be a grommet for the fuel line to pass through, so riding the bike up there just helps make sure that everything lines up and works just right. That, and I've been trying to schedule a ride-in for almost 2 years, so now I'm just kind of stubborn about it.

If not, you cannot blame me if you decide you want some. I've already got two big dogs, had as many as three at one time, but point well taken.

Definitely would like to catch up with you while I'm in the area ... and the easy shot up the Interstate to Redding is a plus.
SageRider Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Might just take you up on that Phil. It's been way to long. I'll add that we could have Sunday night as a meet and greet at our place!!! Order pizza, BBQ, or something. Plenty of BMWSTers up here! I would recommend going up through the central valley rather than commit to a Sierra crossing. While it's still early in the season, we have had several light snows at the uper elevations. (6K+). Hate to see you get stuck by weather. Of course, if you'd prefer the trans-Sierra route, you are welcome at my home. If you overnight at Phil's I can probably make it there also. (I have time critical work over the weekend. If all goes well then I'll be available.)
AdventurePoser Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 So Cal on the 27th is good. If I didn't have to w#rk I'd ride up to Phil and Jamies as well. Haven't seen them in awhile, or Sagerider either. I've bought 3 RDLs and I tend to agree that sending pix is good enough, HOWEVER, on one seat it required several sittings on the bike to get it right. Had I not been there, it would have been necessary to send it back and forth prolly 2X. That gets pricey.... For that reason, when I buy a RDL, I try to schedule it into a ride! Cheers, Steve
Rocket_Cowboy Posted October 27, 2007 Author Posted October 27, 2007 Trip plans are coming together. I've started putting together maps for each leg to plot out the daily mileage and make sure there's no surprises there. So far so good. Taking Michael's advice, I'll likely be taking the southern route to California, and then up the valley from there. It's looking like I-10 from New Mexico to Arizona and into Phoenix. From there over to So Cal ... specific destination there still not defined. From there up to northern California, and then finally up to Redding. The trip home is still largely unplanned. I had toyed with the idea of just doing a SaddleSore 2000 to blast out the ride home in less than 2 days, there's enough people around No Cal that I'm tempted to try and do something there again on Thursday night, Nov 29th, before heading for home.
Rocket_Cowboy Posted November 12, 2007 Author Posted November 12, 2007 T-minus two weeks and counting, so bumping this thread to get an idea on road/weather conditions. News on the fires there in California seems to have faded, are most areas have things pretty well cleared up? Specifically, there seemed to be Interstate closing when things were really bad (I think parts of I-15 and maybe I-70?). My route right now would be mostly sticking to I-10 into So Cal, and then running I-5 up to Redding. Would that route be mostly clear now? My current plan is still to get into the Phoenix area on Monday the 26th to visit with Tom(azkaisr) and anyone else in the area. Tuesday the 27th would have me getting into So Cal ... specific location still to be determined ... hopefully to catch up with Steve, Jamie, and Leslie and anyone else nearby. From there, I'd head up to Benicia on Wednesday the 28th to meet up with Richard, Phil, and anyone else up in the Bay area. My Russell ride-in is schedule for Thursday the 29th, afterwards I'll probably express ride it back home starting Friday. The trip should take me two days, I'm figuring three days gives me some buffer in case something comes up on the way home. Any traffic or weather I need to watch out for, or anyone wanting to catch up along the way ... let me know!
AdventurePoser Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 Glad you are coming out and looking forward to meeting you! The major roads are all open, and hopefully the weather will stay nice... See ya in a couple of weeks! Steve in So Cal
Rocket_Cowboy Posted November 28, 2007 Author Posted November 28, 2007 Thanks for the hospitality and company over dinner last night Tom! For the Northern California people, I'll be staying at Richard's place (BeniciaRT_GT) tomorrow night (Wednesday). He's invited anyone who's interested in catching up over to his place... something about needing to break in a new coffee machine. Just shot him a PM or email for directions. It's been a little on the cold side for a good bit of this trip, temps in the high 30's/low 40's Sunday, low 30's and up into the 50's yesterday, and today in the mid 70's. I think tomorrow won't be as warm, as the Bay area never seems to be all that warm, but at least it's another day spent on the bike rather than at work.
BeniciaRT_GT Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Catcher's mitt on... Thursday is open for another free lodging night if you want. I haven't heard from anyone else yet, but I'll keep my phone on all night and day Wednesday in case. See you tomorrow.
SageRider Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Charlie, I won't be able to make it out to Benicia. Good luck in your quest for the perfect seat! If Minden happens to be on your path home, let me know. We'll keep the light on for you! (temps here are ranging from the teens to the 40s.. Lows are expected to push single digits by the weekend, but no precip forecast)
Rocket_Cowboy Posted November 28, 2007 Author Posted November 28, 2007 Sorry we'll miss you Michael, but I understand the time/distance thing. I need to start checking weather forecasts for Friday/Saturday getting home, but I'm expecting I'll probably end up back tracking back down I-5 and then using either I-40 or I-10 to get back home. 40 was better than I expected getting out here, but not sure I want to gamble on the passes (while they would be more fun if clear) on a more northerly route home.
