Bibendum Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Hi All - I just had the 6k service on my '06 R1200RT, and now it seems that the engine is running noticeably rougher, especially at idle and low speeds. I also noticed that my fuel efficiency seems to have gone down slightly. Prior to the service I was averaging 50 to 52 mpg, now I am at 49 mpg. Are these things normal? On a related note, when I got the bike back the dealer had under filled (in my opinion) the oil. When I went to top off, I accidentally over filled the oil, it's right on the red line...now what? They also switched out my fuel sensor, since it was reading approx. 2 gallons low. Unfortunaely, this didn't fix the problem, it is still reading approx. 2 gal. low, but now it won't register the tank as full at all. Has anyone been able to successfuly resolve fuel guage issues? Thanks for any feedback!
Firefight911 Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 The rough idle is tough to diagnose here. I would suspect a loose connection at the coil for starters. Double check plug tightness. TBS could be off. Oil over fill as you describe is not really overfill. Anywhere in teh red circle is fine. You will, more than likely, notice the oil level drop to the center of the circle and stabilize. I had an out of calibration tank gauge that ended up going out. It was also replaced, as yours. After install, the strip needs to be calibrated. This can take a little time as the strip has to dry out between attempts. Take it back and have tehm calibrate teh strip properly. Mine is dead nuts accurate now. When my light comes on and gives the range, it is accurate to within 20 miles. You might as well have the dealer recheck their work while you have it in for the fuel strip. Speak directly with the Service Manager in a civil tone. Get him to commit to you that it will be returned correct.

I need to call the dealer on Tuesday about the continued fuel sensor issue, so I will talk to them about the rough idle and re-checking their work as well. Thanks again!
bobanddianne Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 We had our tank strip recalibrated and that corrected everything regarding fuel in tank, milage, anticipated miles to go, etc. The oil level thing has already been explained correctly. Can't respond to the roughness, except to say ours is smooth as silk in every regard... have them double check yours. And as an aside to oil usage... My first 600 miles were ALL in the twisties. At 3,000 miles we took a 1,500 mile trip, ...and used two ounces of oil. No sweat if yours uses more at this point. It will gradually improve as it goes. Our around town bike is the 94 R1100RS with 142,000 miles, and it is as miserly on oil as the RT. One other characteristic of the breed is that the valves will start to seat in and future valve adjustments will gradually become smaller and smaller. We are on our fifth BMW bike... is there any other way?
