Schwie Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Finally pulled the trigger on the Autocom but need some advice on where to put this bike powered unit. Also, not sure where and how to hook up the power lead since suggestion is the tail light. Where and how do I locate the proper wire and how should I connect it. Thanks for your advice in advance.
Rocket_Cowboy Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 I can tell you where NOT to mount it. I'll be relocating mine over the winter so it stops getting wet in the rain.
Schwie Posted October 21, 2007 Author Posted October 21, 2007 Pulled the seat and cleared the tail compartment so I could remove the rear tail light cover. After inspection, I determined the autocom could fit nicely in the rear tail section (sandwiched between the two metal plates in the top section of said tail section). I also traced and determined (fingers crossed) the power line (wire) for the rear tail light was grey with black strip. Do I cut the small section of wire, splice both ends and re-attached using a crimp tube which will secure one end of the autocom power line with with the tail light? Or, shall I carefully remove a small amount of insullation from the tail light power lead and wrap & solder the auotcom lead? I believe securing the autocom in the tail section will keep the elements from the unit and make it somewhat easy to access the unit as necessary. Any comments/advice out there before I proceed? Thanks
Dallas Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 I put my ProAVi in exactly the same place, sandwiched between the metal plates). It's in there solid enough not to need velcro. I tapped power off the tail light. My only problem was the length of the leads going forward. My GPS lead was just barely long enough to get to the dashboard. I had to route it over the gas tank instead of underneath it. The cell phone, MP3 and rider headset leads were short, too. I have to route them almost directly down the middle of the underseat area to exit at the front of the rider's seat. It would be nicer to follow the frame so I spent a few more $ at Autocom getting longer leads for everything....
Schwie Posted October 22, 2007 Author Posted October 22, 2007 Thanks BoxerDoc for your reply. System is pretty much hooked-up and ready to go. Test yesterday (in garage) went ok but yet to try in the field. Speakers appear ok but since I like to use earplugs, I'll likely be getting in touch with Arizona Al because his system works much better. Kind regards, David
MarkEngland Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 I mounted my Active-Rider under the passenger seat. I ran all my audio wires under my plastic on the right side and had no problem with length. I pulled power from my BlueSea fuse box in the tail section. GoldenK9 Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Hi Mark, Great effort on your part, especially the detailed web site. Just curious, with all the problems you had with the Autocom or it's staff of experts, what prompted you to buy the Autocom over the Baehr?
MarkEngland Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Hi Mark, Great effort on your part, especially the detailed web site. Just curious, with all the problems you had with the Autocom or it's staff of experts, what prompted you to buy the Autocom over the Baehr? As my website states, the group at Autocom America did a great job at fixing the negative perception that Autocom HQ in the UK left me with. I could not believe the email they sent me. I was shocked to get a call from Autocom America after I posted my thoughts on my website. While the Autocom product lacks some common sense features and design, it works well (after you get it configured). After Autocom America called and told me I would be 100% satisfied or they would return everything including shipping, I felt I should be open minded and try it. I have never installed or used the Baehr so I cannot comment on differences. When I did the research all three top brands were close.
