From what I've read, it appears to be mostly an RT and GS issue? Are there any ST's?

The R1200 series share the same FD so if there is a systemic problem with the FD, it would be across all models. I'm guessing that we've not seen any STs mentioned due to the relatively low number of units on the road.

I'm sure that is because there are many RT and GS bikes but very few ST bikes. I'm sure when final drives are built they don't even know what model bike will get it.

count me in with my 2004 r1100s. i noticed a small leaking around the rubber boot after my 6000 service at san jose bmw. i didnt think much of it, it wasnt dripping or anything. when i had tires replaced at 10000 miles, the shop informed me that the housing was cracked or defective, which i was led to believe was a part inside of the actual external housing. they gave me a loaner final drive off of some adventure bike (which is currently lots of fun) while the part is ordered from germany. i am informed now that the part is received, however the whole service department is closed for a week while all the shop mechanics are at daytona.

all under warranty, and to think i was going to order tires online and have some local bike repair place put them on. i doubt they would have noticed or said a word to me about the drive leak.

I certainly agree that it could just be a statistical thing, with relatively few ST's on the road. But I seem to recall reading that the ST final drive is a bit longer (about 2 inches?) than the RT or GS, and I was wondering if they might have different internals that aren't prone to failure...

I know, prob'ly not...

With the Iron Butt Rally there have been a few well publicized final drive "failures". But, I'm concerned we may be indulging in some mass hysteria -- that there is more "HEAT" than "LIGHT" being brought to this issue.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a system to which you can log a compliant regarding your vehicle. When enough compliants are logged, the NHTSA looks into it. I'm amazed how few compliants can be found on the NHTSA database regarding BMW final drives, given all the paranoia. If you have experienced a real failure log it to this system:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints/

Unfortunately, we are not helping ourselves with "compliants" like this one -- a direct quote of a user complaint found on the NHTSA database:

Complaint Number: 10202781

Summary:

FINAL DRIVE FAILURES ARE BECOMING ALL TOO COMMON ON BMW MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED FROM 2005 ON. BMW IS TAKING A NONCHALANT ATTITUDE IN ITS REPLACEMENT OF THESE UNITS. ALTHOUGH I HAVE NOT HAD A FAILURE, IF YOU WILL LOOK TO ANY OF THE FORUMS YOU WILL FIND NUMEROUS INCIDENTS. *TR

Isn't the gear ratio in a final drive different depending on the bike? beemerboneyard.com lists two final drives with different gear ratio(and the bikes to which it belongs).

One is described as being for an RT/ST(2.62:1), and the other for R/S(2.75:1)
