bobanddianne Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 We are planning to do an extended tour next spring. We have been told there are only a few states that allow lane sharing. Where can we find which states these are? Besides our beloved California, of course
russell_bynum Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Just California...though my understanding is that it is somewhat tolerated (illegal, but tolerated) in NYC in the city.
grayghost Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Only CA, but I was on the Long Island Expressway last week in the A.M. and saw it being done. I've done it myself on the Garden State Parkway. Both these occasions were "stop and go" traffic. I don't think the cars were doing more than 10mph. The lanes aren't really wide enough to do it at much higher speeds, although you could assertively (don't want to use the word "aggressive" in the same sentence as driving) change lanes.
upflying Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Lane sharing is legal and seemingly endorsed by the CHP in Calif. Enjoy it while you can, I have a feeling some elected official up in Sac. has other ideas. My suggestion for lane sharing in other states is to avoid areas where it becomes necessary. Travel through urban areas during off-peak commute times and stay on secondary roads while touring. When I drive through Los Angeles, I try to do it at 3am.

That's what the board is for, but here too is a good source of info: State-by-State Laws
MotorinLA Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 When I drive through Los Angeles, I try to do it at 3am. You realize of course that there is a lot of lane splitting going on at 3am in Los Angeles, only it's the drunks doing it in their cars...
AdventurePoser Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Hi Bob and Diane, Great seeing you guys at Moto Coffee last Tuesday. Maybe some other riders in this thread might share lanes to meet us next month! In the summer, the ability to lane share is wonderful. Nothing beats being stuck in traffic. In Nevada. In August... Steve
bobanddianne Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 Many Thanks To All Who Have Contributed To My National Lane Splitting Knowledge. I had no idea we Californians were so priviledged.
ghaverkamp Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 I had no idea we Californians were so priviledged. Right.
Dick_at_Lake_Tahoe_NV Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Texas is the only other one I know of. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Section 545.060, Transportation Code, is amended by amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsection (e) to read as follows: (a) An operator on a roadway divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic: (1) shall drive as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane, except as provided by Subsection (e); and (2) may not move from the lane unless that movement can be made safely. (e) The operator of a motorcycle may operate the motorcycle for a safe distance between lanes of traffic moving in the same direction during periods of traffic congestion if the operator: (1) is at least 21 years old; (2) has successfully completed a motorcycle operator training and safety course under Chapter 662; (3) is covered by a health insurance plan providing the operator with at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred as a result of an accident while operating a motorcycle; and (4) operates the motorcycle: (A) at a speed not more than five miles per hour over the speed of the other traffic; (B) in traffic that is moving at a speed of 20 miles per hour or less; and © in a location other than a school crossing zone or other than a location where the posted speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less. SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
tobyzusa Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Pretty sure that while it was considered, that legislation was not passed in TX. What was your source for the code?
smiller Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Alas, that legislation was considered but not passed. Never made it out of committee.
