Dobe66 Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Any recommendations for a good online site to purchase replacement shocks? Read a lot of good things about Ohlins so they would be a consideration. Any other advice warmly welcomed.
Jake Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Many of us have have fantastic Ohlins sales & service through Kyle Racing.
awagnon Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Bought some Wilbers from MAX BMW. Can't really buy them online because they have to ask questions about bike, your weight, etc. Took about 10 days to get them as they had to come from Germany.
redryder Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 I'm going to have Lindeman Engineering rebuild, revalve, and respring my stock shocks. They claim they can do it, and the whole kit and caboodle will run me $350 per shock. No, it's not Ohlins or Wilburs, but I'm not trying to shave a few seconds off my lap time. And at the price, I'm sure I'll be happy with the results. After all, I've only got 67K on my original shocks now...but they are shot now and in serious need of tender love and care.
bwr Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Ohlins are great but be aware that they don't go long between rebuilds: maybe 20-30K miles. the problem is that they use really low-friction seals (which makes them better performers, but they don't last as long). I just had mine rebuilt and it cost me $550 including freight. With the touring miles I put on I'll probably need to do this at least every other year If I had to do it all over again I'd go with Works Shocks. By all accounts they perform almost as well (unlikely I'd notice the difference) but will go 50-100K between rebuilds. Up-front costs are comparable.
snod Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 +1 on Works Performance Shocks. I ran mine from 30k to 90k, then got them rebuilt. Currently at 125k and they are not ready for rebuild this winter. Probably next winter though. I don't reacall the exact price, but at the time they were way less than Ohlins. Works Performance
Rider1200RT Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 I have Wilbers and really like them. I have 35K on them and went to Alaska with them also. So far they still feel like new. The milage between rebuilds depends on how the bike is ridden. Stock shocks rarely last more than 20-25K. The advantage of aftermarket shocks is rebuildability and longer service life over stock. They are built for your weight and riding style. Ask the seller/dealer how much rebuilds cost is for the brand you are looking at. Just my 0.02 cts. YMMV

Unless you are in a hurry I would strongly suggest monitoring the Classified section here and on IBMWR for a set of used Ohlins/Works/Wilbur etc. They come up from time-to-time for around $750/pair and would provide night-and-day better performance than the stock rebuild option for about the same money.
Dobe66 Posted October 17, 2007 Author Posted October 17, 2007 Thanks everyone for you input. Since I've got the winter to look for used and research other options (e.g. Works), there's not a lot immediate pressure. Looking forward to Spring with an improved handling bike.

Works Performance I got a set of Work Performance (I believe two years ago) and they are fantastic. I think they cost me just over $1K or about $500 less than Ohlins. They also are fairly inexpensive to rebuild and they are tailored to your weight (riding solo or two up) and riding style.
schumacher62 Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 i too am interested in the works shocks, so i sent off a mail to get a quote for my r1100s. it is as follows: "We can set you up with a Street tracker for the front that will feature adjustable preload and rebound dampening for $469.00,and for the rear we do the Ultra sport with adjustable Compression, rebound and threaded preload for $829.00.We will custom make these shocks to the riders weight and riding style." i dont know the price of ohlins, but i dont see how these can be much less expensive than that well known and proven brand. are they worth it?
mike g Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Regarding the threaded preload, does anyone know if works or ohlins offers a remote preload adjustment, like the orignal? is it relatively easy, or possible to do a threaded preload adjustment without removing too much bodywork? Does the adjustment tool/spanner come with the shocks? Thanks mike

If you mean remote as in a further distance from the shock, I suppose any good brake hose fabricator could extend the hose.
mike g Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 That is what I meant, remote as in similar to the original, so you don't have to use a spanner for adjusting it. Thanks, mike
