External pouch for BMW tankbag?

My '06 R1200RT came with BMW tankbag. Nicely made and a brilliant mounting system! But... My previous RKA bag spoiled me with its multiple exterior pouches to organize stuff. Being a bigger guy with a custom Russell that moved me back an inch or so, I can't help but notice several inches of open space between the tank bag and my belly - space I can envision partially filled with an external pouch to store frequently needed items.

Has anyone found a nice pouch to add on that doesn't look like a cheezy add on? Yes, I realize I will need to violate the waterproofing liner to attach pouch to bag. I'm thinking 3 or 4 big brass snaps to attach, with RTV to re-seal the inside. The pouch does not need to be absolutely waterproof, I usually just store things like change, lip grease, visor cleaner, keys, etc.

Marsee used to make a couple of handy pouches like that. They had an adjustable strap that ran around the perimeter of the bag. Check their web site and see if they are still available.

I wouldn't worry overmuch about sealing things up. I have 4 fairly large (you can stick your finger in them) holes on the sides of my tank bag, slits, actually. I use them to route wires in and out of the bag for my goodies and heated gear. Never had any evidence of water in the bag and I run all day rain at times.

I bought an inexpensive child's kidney belt with a nice buckle and adjustable straps which fits perfectly around my BMW tankbag. It provides me with a nice-sized exterior pouch, perfect for sunglasses, a smaller pouch for lipbalm, sunscreen and coinage and a smaller separate pouch (designed for a cell-phone or bottle I think) which I use for a bottle of windshield cleaner, my tire guage and a small xenon flashlight for checking my oil gauge.

You can just make out the light blue kidney belt in this photo, small pouch on left.

Just for clarification...my GF informs me I should have called it a "Fanny Pack", not a kidney belt.

Instead of attaching a pouch to BMW's bag (which really ought to have two or three of them), I bought a Touratech handle bar pouch, which attaches to the bar risers just in front of the tankbag. It fits well, holds a bunch of stuff, and didn't require any alterations.

I also bought a "Handlebar Utensils Bag" by Touratech. It is, in my opinion, a "Best-kept-secret" of R1200RT accessories. Thoroughly appreciated it; does exactly what it's designed for & is a good deal at around $30.

Unfortunately for me ( wink.gif ), it fits in the same place as the Jack Frost mount for my Zumo 550.

Ain't giving up that mount...

I have the BMW tank bag too and, although the mounting system is great, it really does lack any imagination as to external pouches etc. I have found that I can use the space above the waterproof liner to stuff lots of things. I put all the things I won't need to get to on the road in the waterproof section and close that up with the drawstring. Now I can stick things in the zipper section and they stay on top for easy access. I too have the Touratek handlebar bag which is great, but I've never used it with the tank bag. I don't see how you guys can even reach it with the tank bag in place. Great thread here I hope we get some more creative ideas.

Brilliant! That is exactly what I'm envisioning. Thank you!

Your welcome. BTW, there's a great selection of them on eBay for little cost. I have just put in a bid on a slightly larger leather one with a proper bottle carrier and a cell phone pouch attached. One pouch will be for my water and another for the Kenwood FRS radio I carry. The center pouch will make for less fumbling when I want to grab my digital camera.

Best of all. I can strap it on myself when I go walkies.
