Shop Manual Question

Hi all,

I have seen a clip of Jim's DVD, looks great, but I am looking for a good paper manual for the R1100RT. I am anxious to get started on maintenance, (I do all my own work) and see how she ticks. The dealer will be shipping me the missing owner's manual, but I need a shop manual. I saw he had a Clymers on his shelf. Is this a good one? Or is there a high end BMW book that is a must have?

I have a real live BMW factory shop manual that I purchased along with the bike in 1996. I don't know if they are still available from your dealer but that would be my starting point.

Best Wishes, Mark Shuell.

Personally I think you just about need all three, the Clymers, the Haynes and the factory one (available on CD with printable pages). Each covers something the others don't and each has its strengths. I guess if I could only buy one for the 1100 series it would be the BMW CD.

i have the BMW & the Haynes manuals and Jim's DVD that i ordered when i changed my clutch last year.

The BMW doesn't go into much details but it gives you a good overview of what needs to be done. It is a good complement of the Haynes which I really like..Though I've never seen the Clymer

It would be better in the trash can. Clymers has some serious errors in the manual that could damage your engine if you follow them. Get the BMW shop manual if you are a competent wrench. Add the Haynes if you need guidence.

I have all three. That's the order I look in them. My BMW manual is falling apart, my Haynes is falling apart, my Clymers looks like it's still new.

Example(s)?

Or a link if you have covered this topic before. I own the Haynes and Clymer and don't want to blow up the engine.

I don't know about errors, but the Clymers manual was disappointing to me (an ex technical writer). A fair amount of content, and no easy way to find what you are looking for. In other words, could have been organized better. Don’t know about the Haynes, but their underwear is OK... eek.gif

From what I could see, the BMW Service Manual in PDF is missing a few chapters (Fuel Management 14,& 15)(17, 19, 20, 22....). I saw nothing about Le-Jetronic, Motronic, ABS, ABS2, Diagnostics. Does anyone know how where to get the full manual?

That is like the one I have. It is an "After Sales" manual.

If you look, chapters (Fuel Management 14,& 15) is missing.

Most everything in that book is how to R&R parts, and Maintainance. There is no Diagnostics. Granted, I do not have a GT1, but the missing chapters tell you how to troubleshoot Motronic, ABS, ABS2, and gives trouble codes that you can read with a DIY LED box, or a multimeter.

Now, I do have the trouble codes (I don't need those), but what I'm looking for are the missing chapters.

Does anyone know how/where to get the "FULL" manual..... hopefully in PDF?

OR.... Does anyone know where to get a copy of the book that sold on ebay (Item number: 300142583775).

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

You are attempting to equate numbers 14 and 15 with missing chapters. They are not missing, the manual is laid out in Groups. You have the full manual.

If this is the full manual, where are the Diagnostics?

I would had thought that it would had been covered under "Maintenance Schedule" seeing how you are to check Fault Codes when doing one. It still looks an R&R manual to me. A full manual would have it all.

For instance, look at the contents for "Brakes" on Chapter 34. Anything you would want to know about how to replace every part there is, but not on how you knew that it was bad in the first place (other than Pads and Rotors). If the lights are flashing, it could be the battery, and not the ABS at all. I have not seen where it even talks about fault codes.
