aal3
I'm selling my 1150rt. Now thinking of the 1200rt. The one thing I didn't like about the 1150 was that I thought it was rather top heavy. Anyone have any comments on how the 1200rt compares to the 1150rt in that regard? Thanks. Link to comment
motoguy128
I can't compare to a 1150RT, but I can compare it to my 1150R, which should have a similar chassis less the fairing. I regularly rode with a passenger and side cases. I find the R1200RT easier to manuever at low speeds, it feels better balanced somehow. It could be the balance shaft. Overall it's heavier than my 1150R, but it's quite a bit lighter than the 1150RT. The biggest improvement I think comes from the Plastic fuel tank and the battery is under the seat, not under the tank like in my roadster. It's still bulker and I feel the weight whne moving hte bike around the garage and when parking, I have extra respect for it, but once rolling, it's a gem to ride. Link to comment

The R1150RT is one of the easiest tip over bikes there is I think. Top heavy plus a very short rake makes it 'fall in' at a stop very easy. Much less so on the new bikes. Link to comment
Redbrick
Anyone have any comments on how the 1200rt compares to the 1150rt in that regard? Thanks. Like strawberry shortcake with whipped cream on it as opposed to without....Both good, but...... .. My experience with short legs (29-30 inseam)is that they both are tippy and the 40 or so pounds lighter 1200 is less so.....Much less of an issue if you can actually touch the ground.... keithb
Arthur If there was anything you did not like about your 1150 BMW pretty much fixed it when they designed the 1200. 12-15 more h.p., 43 lbs. lighter so it is not top heavy, no more pull to the right when you turn the throttle while sitting at idle due to counter balancers being used, actually flickable in the turns now, saddle bags that will hold a full face helmet, cruise control, 7.1 gallon tank (300 mile range),cruise control, heated seats if you want them. The only thing you will need to upgrade for the most part is the seat, shocks, and maybe the windscreen. One 20-30 minute test ride was all it took for me to make the change from my 04 RT to the 05 RT. So far I am loving this bike and I put 14K miles on it last year. I have not ridden this many miles since 1994. Try it and I bet you buy it. Have fun with your search. Link to comment
Survived-til-now
I had an 1150RT and it was always a bit of a worry pushing it in and out of the garage or in confined spaces - all too easy for it to go just that bit too far over and then nothing would hold it. The 22-something kilograms they knocked off the weight with the 1200RT is only part of the story, the weight has been redistributed and it feels much lighter to push around. On the move I didn't have any problems with manouvering in between traffic in London with the 1150 nor with the 1200. I did have a few gripes about the 1150 and when I read the blurb on the new 1200RT I could see they had addressed all of my (minor) gripes - so I went straight out and ordered one unseen and untested - I haven't regretted it. BeemerLover
My experience with the 1150 is that at least some of the tip overs are due to the grabby servo brakes. We have had several instances in my MOA club where this was the culprit. Low speed and grabby brakes plus the steering geometry makes for a poor situation. I test drove the 2007 R1200RT which has no servo and unlinked brakes and had no feeling the bike would go over at slow speed. Link to comment
