Hennepinboy
Returning from the BMWMOA rally my R1150RT died on the side of the freeway. History: I had been chasing a noise that I thought to be the LH timing chain. Replace the tensioner with a R1200 up-dated design. The noise seem to be less but was still there in the 4000 rpm range below and above the noise stopped or in 6th gear. Having read on the net of many R1150’s that made this type of noise I was concerned but decided to ride to the rally anyway. On the way home the bike died on the side of the freeway and I ended up trailering the bike home. Trouble shooting I found the crank bolt that holds the bottom alternator belt pulley and the cup for the Hall sensor to the crank to have backed out. The pin on the cup was badly bent so I order a replacement. I received the parts yesterday. This morning I install the cup and a new belt. Went to start the engine and the battery is dead. Hook up the charger and decide as long as the fairing is off I might as well check the valve clearance. I remove a valve cover and the bottom was covered with a gray film. I ran my finger though the film and went out in the sun light to examine what I found SOB it’s metal. Looking closer there is flake of metal. SOB! I drained the oil and there is lot’s of metal. I cut the filter open and there even more, large flakes of ferrous metal, check with a magnet. SOB! I had just change the oil before the leaving for the rally and it looked good, the filter from this change was draining into my waste oil container, so I cut this one open, there was no visible metal in the filter. The bike has 68,XXX miles and has had the oil change every 2-3000 mile from new using Amzoil 20/50wt. I am sure that the Amoil had nothing to do with this failure. I am too deep in a gumption trap to work on the bike today, planning on tearing the engine down and deciding what to do, repair or replace the engine or part the bike out and purchase a V-Strom. I think that I am done with BWM’s. Link to comment
Paul Mihalka
I'm sorry about your trouble. I hope the V-Strom never blows up on you. But it can. Link to comment
Ken H.
Yeah that sucks. There are a lot of good used 1150 motors flouting about from wrecked ones. If it was me I'd go that route. Link to comment

Curt, if by chance someone has tampered with,, put sand,, or otherwise put any foreign substance into your engine there is a good chance your insurance will cover the repair (or at least a lot of it).. Maybe send in an oil sample to Blackstone Labs to have it analyzed.. Twisty Link to comment
fossil
Whew! What a relief. I thought it was going to be another drive train problem. Link to comment
