BereIsland
I'm having trouble getting into 1st from second whilst I'm riding my 12RT, sometimes I can't even get down from third, I have booked the bike in for next week but I was wondering what could be causing the trouble, the clutch seems OK. Just for fun my bike is just out of warrenty Steve Link to comment
Boffin
A common (and cheap) problem on boxers is a loose gearchange linkage, especially where it clamps onto the input shaft to the gearbox. The clamp bolt vibrates loose causing slop which eventually stops correct gear engagement. Ten minutes with a spanner to fix. On the other hand, worn or bent selector forks can cause this problem. If it is this, or worse, the gear cluster, I would try to get your dealer to go into bat with BMW for you. I would try for at least free parts, with you paying labour. Andy Link to comment
Richard_Spag
I had trouble like this fairly early on with mine. The answer was to lube the gear change where the linkages are and where the shaft is supported. Bike has been shifting fine for the 30,000 miles since then with no problem! Worth a try! BereIsland
Thanks Andy I didn't think to have a look and see if there is anything loose, I will and at the same time do what Richard suggests and squirt some oil onto the joints. Thanks again and I will let you know what happens Link to comment
BereIsland
Richard, I spayed everything this morning with some trusty WD40, and it seems to have fixed it, thanks. I haven't ridden the bike much lately without getting a good soaking so I suppose that the rain might have stiffened things up a bit. Steve Link to comment
Richard_Spag
Glad the tip worked! My gearchange was always worst a day or so after it had been out in the rain - which was why I tried oiling on all of the visible pivot/bearing points. Cheers Richard Link to comment
BereIsland
Richard, didn't think for one minute that it could be as simple as a drop of oil. Getting back home yesterday was fun though, 20mph up hill and stuck in 4th. Thanks again Steve Link to comment
