Battery Tender Jr. Woes

I keep my tender hooked up to my /6 and noticed the indicator light isn't on anymore. I checked the outlet for voltage and that isn't the problem. I'm hoping the light bulb is just burnt out. If I hook it all back up what voltage should I be getting at the battery posts? (providing the tender is charging)

Linc, the charging voltage depends on where the battery Tender is in it’s charging duty cycle.. Plus you not only have the voltage issue but those little chargers also control the current so can start out at probably 1-2 amps & finally taper off to something under 10 milli amps..

I don’t have the specs handy for the Tender Jr. but if it is like most small float chargers it starts off at something like 1.5 amps@ 14.2-15 volts & tapers off as the battery comes up to full charge to probably some where’s around 13.2-13.6 volts while in float..

Pull the charger off the battery, then turn the headlight on for about 20 minutes,, then let the bike sit for about an hour,, then measure the battery voltage,, then connect your charger & let it charge for about 10 minutes.. At that time you should probably be charging at 1-2 volts above the previously measured battery voltage..

Stan, fuse is good. Thanks, Twisty. I'm riding my /6 daily so it won't need much charging. I understand it depends on the condition of the battery I'm charging. I just wanted a ballpark figure to work with to see if the tender was indeed still working. Thanks again.

Are you using the pig tails, or BMW outlet to connect the tender?

If it's thru the BMW outlet, unscrew the BMW male end and make sure the wires are still connected to the poles.

Repeated use and turning this part can cause them to disengage. DAMHIK tongue.gif

This will result in no light on the Battery Tender.

Hope this works.

Ditto. Mine came "unfused" and it was an easy job to re-solder the poles.

Yes I'm using the pigtails hardwired to the battery. I have this fused setup on 2 of my bikes (not the RT) and no light present on any bike including the RT. I haven't had time to look at them due to work and honey dos but I will look into it soon. Thanks

I hate to say it...but it may be blown.(Had the same thing happen to me, no light, tried it on all three of my bikes) The instructions clearly say...disconnect the tender from the ac source. Connect to the bike, then reconnect ac power. I sent mine back to Deltran and the shipping and customs cost more than buying a new one here in canada dopeslap.gif

Tomas, almost all battery chargers will say to disconnect from AC source before disconnecting or re-connecting to the battery.. That is more of a safety warning than a prevent charger damage thing.. They don’t want any chance of sparks at the battery connection as the out-gas from the battery charging (hydrogen) is very explosive under the right circumstances..

Heh Twisty,

Modular plug on the Battery Tender guarantees adequate distance from the battery it self. I usually have a lit cigar burn'n when I connect mine! And after 7 years of doing so I’m still on the forum thumbsup.gif

NO matter what the instructions say, I think the tender cooks the battery if left on for long periods (they say it won't???). I hook mine up over night on each bike every so often if not riding. I have one that the light does not come on so cut off the chord (might need the connections some day) and tossed it in the garbage.

Bruce, if the Battery Tender is functioning properly there is less chance of sulfating the battery by leaving it connected than by charging the way you do.. Battery sulfation is a big problem for small motorcycle batteries if the charging voltage & current isn’t watched closely..

Twisty1 is correct...my personal experience has been 8-9 years of service using Deltrans battery tenders and I plug the battery everyday! And left plugged in over the winter season.

Best 40.00 bucks canadian anyone can spend.

Thanks everybody. The verdict is in, "tender is toast"! I'll just buy a new BT Junior. BMW gel charger be damned... lurker.gif
