RTRay
Sunday I left the house in Dixon, Illinois for a great day ride up through northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. It was perfect riding weather (80 deg and sunny) and I rode some of Illinois best motorcycle roads in the Galena area. About noon I rode up through Madison, Wisconsin and over to Waukeshaw to meet a friend at his airplane hanger. He just happens to have numerous airplanes, one of which is a P-51 Mustang. After touring his hanger we went up flying for about around the Milwaukee area in the most spectacular airplane ever built! The P-51D has been my favorite airplane since I was a kid and I have dreamed of flying in one my entire life. It was very much as I thought it would be except MUCH LOUDER! The sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine is overwhelming and goes right through you as you sit in the cockpit. However it is a very smooth running engine and in flight the airframe feels very solid and does not vibrate much at all. We flew around at about 285mph and toured the local area, buzzing a home of one of his friends before coming back to do an overhead approach and land. What an experience! If you ever get the chance to ride in a P-51, take it! It is a flight you will never forget! Here is a link to some photos from the day. http://picasaweb.google.com/south.terry Terry Link to comment

Tasker
It worked this time. Nice pictures! Steve Knapp and I rode SW Wisconsin and SE Minnesota last summer and I was impressed by the beauty, the great roads, the great vistas and of course, all the great pie. Pie is love. A friend here in Indy also owns a P-51 Mustang. It is beautiful but I've not been up in it. He flies all over the country doing air shows and fly-ins. Very cool and as you said, the sound is amazing. Looked like a great trip. Link to comment
Flyer5
Real nice plane, They have always been one of my favorites .First would have to be one of its its predecessors the P40 . Then I am not sure why but the PBY flying boat . Hope you plan on going back for more flights . Most fun I have had in a plane was a Extra 300 . What a fun plane to fly 400degree/sec roll rate hard to stop the wings where you want them in a roll. But I also like flying around at 30mph in my UL . Dave Link to comment
Albert
That looked like an absolute blast. Coincidentally I was working out in Southern California for the past several months and I made it up to Chino to an air museum (see link). They had 3 P51s and a P40 along with lots of other cool planes. Like an idiot, my camera was back in my hotel room. http://www.planesoffame.org/ Link to comment
