Hennepinboy
Returning Sunday from the BMWMOA National Rally my 02 R1150RT engine died. Running smoothly at steady 80 mph, the engine shut down, no warning, sputtering, or coughing. The RID continued to show the fuel level and engine temperature, the ABS unit appears to work. I have retrieved the bike on a trailer. All the Tupperware has been stripped, battery is at full charge, the starter turn the engine over smoothly, all fuses are good. My hearing is very poor and I can not hear the fuel pump running, so I do not know if it working or not. I have removed both spark plugs, there is no spark when the engine turns over. Both plugs where dry and a nice brown color. Removed one fuel injector, turning over the engine there is no fuel spraying out of the injector. I am beginning to think that the Motronic unit may have quit working. Is there an easy way to test the Motronic unit? Or is there any place where I can send the unit for testing. I hate to $900 part at a problem, not knowing if it is the problem or not. There maybe a problem that took the Motronic unit out, I would hate to fry a new or good used unit. Link to comment
Mr Pou
I'd follow Occams razor first before you start replacing brains: No spark and no fuel, is the side stand cutout switch bad? Kill switch bad? Link to comment
ShovelStrokeEd
Side stand switch or kill switch will also kill the RID so it probably is not them. Both spark and fuel pump depend on signals from the HES sensor to keep them running. If the fuel pump had died suddenly, the bike would have exhibited some indication of sputtering (running out of gas) before it stopped, not just quit. I doubt the Motronic is dead, they are pretty reliable to say the least. HES sensor would be my first guess. The fuel pump should run for 2 seconds or so when the ignition is switched on with both the side stand up and the kill switch in the run position. Get someone with better hearing to verify that first thing. If that is OK, then for sure, proceed to a diagnosis of the HES signal. Link to comment

Curt, hook one of the spark plugs back up or ground one side plug wire while checking for spark on the other side.. That bike has a lost spark ignition so the spark plug on one side is the ground path for the other side.. Even so, with both sides removed you still should get some faint spark as the coil will arc internally to give some ground path.. Check for power TO the ign coil,, then see if the fuel pump runs for a few seconds when first keyed up (have someone with good hearing listen or open the fuel cap & listen with your ear right on the filler opening).. If the pump DOES run,, then with both spark plugs removed put the trans in high gear & with kick stand down & key ON & slowly rotate the engine using the rear wheel (you should hear the fuel pump run as the engine goes through a full revolution (if not suspect the HES or ignition related problem).. If the pump doesn’t operate at first key on then suspect a pump problem of power problem to the pump, or problem with the Motronic or pump relay.. Twisty Link to comment
Fugu
HES sensor would be my first guess. That's what two of us told him at advrider already. he posted this in reply: Problem found (maybe)! I removed the alt belt cover and found that the bolt the holds the magnet shield for the Hall sensor and the bottom pully to have came loose. I have not yet replace it to see if the bike will start, this does look like the problem. I hope that Hall sensor is not damaged. Hopefully it's just a bolt. Link to comment
Hennepinboy
Fugu are you quick, it could not been more then a few seconds from when I posted on Adventure Rider to now.
