Two BMW Battery Chargers Gone Bad?

A few years ago, in a moment of desperation, I bought a BMW Advanced Charging System. By all appearances, it's a Battery Tender with a BMW logo - except for the color of the case, they're identical.

That unit worked fine for three years. Then, suddenly, it stopped working - no lights at all. I checked the outlet - it's OK. Even though there's no lights, the unit had a faint hum, so I know there was power getting to it. There was no evidence of other power issues in the house - computers and other equipment were doing fine. I only used the charger in the accessory outlet, so no chance of reversing polarity. Neither bike has CANUS. I took it back to the dealer, and after a few days of testing they gave me a new unit (10 year warranty, which is good).

The new unit worked fine on both my GT and my wife's RS for a couple of months. Suddenly, the second unit isn't working. Same exact symptoms - no lights, but a faint buzz. I took it back to the dealer today, and they're going to test it. Obviously they're asking questions as to how I had two units fail. I'm not sure they're going to honor the warranty this time.

Mostly, I'm looking for ideas on how to figure out the root cause of this (if it's not just bad chargers). Obviously I don't want to ruin a third one. I also want to be prepared to deal intelligently with the dealer if they argue with replacing it.

Thoughts from the brain trust?

Are you using a new generation glass matt battery (optima technology). I work for Carquest and sell auto parts to professional shops and recently learned from my battery rep that glass matt batteries require a more powerful battery charger then a conventional battery. One that will charge at 15.4 volts instead of the usual 14.5. Using the improper charger may result in damager to the charger, according to my Rep. This may be a possible anwser to your problem. You might look into it. Hope this helps.
