SWB
ttt- just wanting to make sure i use a BMW spec oil...any advice? Well, no one is responding probably because these oil questions are asked and argued continuously. Or, maybe they're all out riding. Bottom line is, any good motor oil should work. The BMW has a dry clutch, so there isn't an issue concerning detergents and such. On the other hand, as quoted from another forum member: BMW USA Service Bulletin 2855 reads: Recommendation: Brand name HD oil, API classification SF, SG, or SH; CD or CE suffixes are permissable; alternatively, brand name HD oil. CMCC classification G4 or G5; suffix PD2 is permissible. ... The API specification SJ [and later, SJ to SL] is NOT APPROVED for use in any BMW motorcycle. That would mean that many standard car oils are NOT approved for BMW's, because certain beneficial additives have been removed from motor oil in the attempt to protect catalytic converters. Check the SAE/API specs on the oil before you buy. I use synthetic Mobil 1, and don't worry about the rest of the details. Link to comment
AndyT
Every one has a different opinion, however I would start with your owners manual (if you don't have one do a search of your model online) which has the recommended oil viscosity and weight for the temp. range you'll be in. I would think in summer you will need a 20wt-50wt HEAVY DUTY oil to meet the manufactures recommendations. Brand is not as important as specifications and API rating of the oil which BMW spells out in the owners manual. You will find thousands of threads on oil and oil related products on this site! Good Luck! Link to comment
