I am so happy I got mine when I did...thanks again, Paul. I've owned 15 or so bikes over the years, and the R12ST is far and away the best of the lot. My condolences to those folks who chose to get all upset about the stacked headlights or whatever other styling lick got you so annoyed you didn't buy one.

Wow, that was kinda quick.

I've been nothing but happy with mine (other than a few minor points, but I've found work arounds for those.)

I really haven't heard any negative reviews from r12st owners - and those are typically the loudest bunch... Weird.

+1

+1 to what Ted said too!

I've been telling other riders I'd get another R1200ST in an instant if something happened to my present one. Now we will have to take extra care for our babies.

I will have to admit that I was about to put mine up for sale. Actually had already made contact with one person over it.

Not now. Told my wife to commit me if I sold it or tried to sell it.

I love that bike!! My reason for selling was to replace with a bike that was more sporting oriented than the ST currently is since I now have the GSA. When I say that, I am talking GSXR-750 sporting so understand the context.

Not now. I'll be hanging on to this classic. thumbsup.gif

I am a little surprised by this as my local dealer would sell one within hours of getting one in. Either new or used!

Didn't they do something similar after they released the '05 ST? I seem to recall our dealer saying they put mfg on hold through '06, and I was surprised when the '07 came out the door.

I gotta admit, I love my '05 ST. It's only been my second bike, and it was an upgrade from an '80 R65. Huge change, but I've never regretted it.

Are they shelving the new F800ST as well?

Well, that's one interpretation. Ultimately, even the Ford Edsel was deemed a "classic." grin.gif

I really think BMW hit the "sweet spot" with the ST, finding exactly the right mix of sporting and touring capabilities. The engine works, the transmission works, the suspension works, and, well, it just "works" overall. Where BMW may have missed the mark is in the ST's unconventional styling and in its pricing--a fully-loaded-for-touring ST bumps into the realm of RT, which has an electrically-adjustable screen, greater range, and is undoubtedly more comfy over the long haul. But, for me, after looking at the full range of BMWs, I was convinced that the ST's "sweet spot" and mine converged pretty handily. And, it sure didn't hurt that BMW was offering very large incentives at the time I bought my year-old "demonstrator," with thirty-some miles on the odometer. thumbsup.gif

I couldn't be happier with my ST. It's a little sad that more could not--or chose not to--experience the joy.

Out of curiousity, does anyone have any sales numbers for total R12STs sold?

Going by serial numbers, U.S. bound production was 536 for the 05-06 model years. Can't say anything about recent production.

The new BMWRA magazine has an "opinion" piece that yaks about "Why Certain BMW Models Don't Sell". This doofus claims the ST does not handle and is not as nimble and stable as the R1100S. Having owned/ridden an S for two years and 15,000 miles, and having put 24,000 miles on my ST, I say that's a load of crap misinformation regurgitated by someone who maybe rode one for a dozen miles and goes by whatever spews out of the internet. Maybe the stock shocks limit the handling, but you can say that about any BMW bike. The Wilbers I put on my ST have made it a joy on a twisty road.

The true test for me was a few weeks ago, riding my Ducati. For the first time since I've owned it, I said to myself, "I think I'd rather be on my ST". If you know me, you would realize that that is quite a statement.

People that chose the RT over the ST just because the price bumped into it's territory weren't ST customers anyway. The ST and the RT are very different bikes, even though they share the same drivetrain.

My ST is a keeper for me, especially now that it's essentially a one year model. thumbsup.gif

this discussion about the price viz. RT is the same discussion from 10 years ago in regard to the RS. unfortunately, if you were an RS/ST kind of guy, you had to take a big hit on resale because of how it was priced. when i bought my 97RS in 2000, the guy had been trying for a year to sell it. i bought it with cases and extras for 2500 less than a comparable RT at the time. good deal for me, not for him. value is in the eye of the beholder and whether what the RT offers is truely of extra value, the RS/ST with same engine, transmission, suspension with bags for about the same price is just not perceived to be the same value by many buyers. i was hoping bmw would have learned this lesson when they brought out the ST, but they never seem to learn. by way of example, look at the price of the naked r1200, it's darned near RT territory with bags, screen, abs, grips. when the r1150 was $9995, they got many people in the showroom who either bought those or stepped up. i would love a new r1200 but will be ____ if i'll pay that kind of money. rant finished.

Well, I kicked around the R12RT, but it really came down to three options--the ST, the K1200S, or the K1200GT. The GT wasn't yet available when I had the itch to buy and I couldn't justify its (then-announced) price. The K12S nearly had me, but I wanted genuine touring capabilities and its tiny/weird sidecases put me off. Like the tale of the three bears, the ST was neither too big or too small, too fast or too slow, too sporting or too touring . . . it was "just right."

I didn't realize you had a GSA. Just bought one myself a few weeks ago.

Heresy! Pure heresy. grin.gif

I understand the context and I was wondering how much saddle time the ST might be getting with all those bikes you've got now. wave.gif

First off, I would take any info BMWNA gives you with a grain of salt. If you go back and look at my posting history, you'll see where I was told several different stories by BMWNA over the course of a year when I tried to order an '06 ST - and then later, an '07. But that said, it's possible that the ST is only being discontinued for sales in the US - not in other markets.

I love my ST - it's the best combination of sport handling, touring and everyday commuting of any bike I've owned. It's a shame that "...BMW so totally f***ed up its introduction into the US market..." (our BMW regional rep's words - not mine).

I own a K12S and visited my local dealer in Sweden to test ride a R12ST today. Production in Germany on the 07 bike has stopped they told me - there are none to be had in Sweden and I can't order one from Germany.

As to whether the bike will be discontinued or if it is just getting a facelift (minor model changes) they couldn't say.

For those that were around and interested at the time, the R11XXRS was not continuously in production during it's lifetime. It was called dead at least twice by different sources and a look at the production months bear that out. At one point, most of a year went by without any production. I'm not saying that the ST will be the same, but we can only hope so.

I have to agree that the ST was priced too closely to the RT. Regardless, I hate the acreage of fairing on those types and in my case gladly paid the price to get the better bike.

I love my ST. I've got more than a few hundred thousand miles on R-RS's, alot of them on 2 RS's AFTER they were declared dead. The 11xx RS's were not in regular production for a few years.

It's funny, people say they hate the looks of the ST, but after riding they love them.

Those of us here, that ride and love the ST, know the truth, it's an awesome motorcycle. I ride mine 365 days a year. It IS my transportation. I tour on it, commute, and mine sees 90 indicated EVERY day. I live way west of Phoenix AZ and commute into town. No burps, no nothing. I do my own maintenance, change my own tires, ABS services, and now with the code reader, mine will never see a dealer.

My dealer's OK, just it's a long way there and I'm an Aircraft Mechanic so I understand maintenance.

I have the BMW bags, rack, MV risers, working on the stock seat,XM radio(I only use touring), Cee Bailey I use for touring and winter. Ohlins are next, front and rear.

This one's a keeper and my goal is to have the highest mileage ST in the world....someday.

We ST rider's NEED to unite. Seems as if we are an exclusive club if the numbers above are correct (500 and some change?).

Long live the ST....

I spent quite a bit of time before deciding on the ST to replace my RS. Only 6K and Wilber just added. Aftermarket exhaust. Most of my riding is 3 hours or less. Have large parabellum for Winter, and this works great. I have no plans on replacing this bike. What other bike "sport touring" bike has this relatively low weight(other than Ducati), more than adequate power, ABS, and comfort? As for looks-- let's wait and see what happens over time. I get the "rail road engine comin' at you (PIAA's add to this) quite a bit. I like the looks. A classic? Who knows! Agree we should stick together, but how? Steve C in NJ

I think this would be a grear place for ST owners. It looks like this site has just been created: http://www.r1200st.us/

Two years and no activity. Perhaps the owner of the domain should transfer it to one of us.

That's Shawn Wilson's web site. He's a frequent poster here. I tried to set up an R12ST Yahoo Group, but I wasn't really interested in moderating it. I too think it would be a good idea to have a ST dedicated list serve or something. Anyway... wave.gif
