SteveSardone
finished servicing the '04RT today and while test driving I noticed backfiring while decelerating. I don't remember ever hearing this before. Any thoughts on what I might've done wrong? I adjusted valves, TBS, plugs, new tires, new rear brake pads, all fluids, wired in the Zumo... Steve Steve, are you running a stock or aftermarket exhaust system? If a stock exhaust, you didn’t leave a vacuum line disconnected did you (maybe bottom of TBI) ? How about the valve adjustment? Were the valves close or did you have to move one a fair amount.. If they were close good,, if you moved one more that the others suspect that one in now incorrect.. If it never popped before but does now it’s possible you did something wrong while doing the service so maybe re-check everything.. Twisty Link to comment
SteveSardone
the exhaust is stock. Valves were very close. I'll check the vacuum hoses. I also moved the fuel filter from inside the tank to the outside per instructions on ibmwr. thanks for the reply, Steve Link to comment
philbytx
Steve, It is not out of the ordinary for the RT to give the occasional little "pop" on the overrun after you shut the throttle down. Not anything bad....it's due to the tuning of the motor running hot/lean. Link to comment

SteveSardone
thanks philby-I'm going to ride it some more and decide if it is abnormal. Steve Link to comment

Ken H.
Did you have the battery disconnected when you were doing the wiring? If so did you go through the throttle retraining procedure? Regardless I would do it to reset the bottom on idle TPS voltage reference. Link to comment
SteveSardone
Yes, new battery while doing all the other service. I will look up that procedure and try that-thanks Ken. Steve Link to comment
arbee
Backfiring is normal unless you have zero throttle which turns off the motronic If cables are dragging or tight it wont be zero. Link to comment

If it did you wouldn’t be able to start the bike at closed throttle & it wouldn’t allow engine idle at 0 (closed) throttle.. Closed throttle decel ABOVE about 1500 RPM’s should allow the Motronic to shut off the injectors until the RPMs’ drop to around 1500 RPM’s, then the injectors are allowed to function again.. (that is that little annoying kick you feel when decelerating through the 1500 RPM range) Twisty Link to comment
