R1100RSpurist Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Hey yall, I know i will get a bunch of different responses but how often should i change the final drive and transmission oil on my 1995 R1100RS with 82,000 miles on it? I changed it last year but only put about 2,000 miles on it. Also i still have a phobia of using non BMW oils for anything, If i could perhaps see a roughly conclusive agreement on which synthetic non BMW oils (engine, final drive, and Transmission) that would be helpfull. I live in Southern California by the way so the Temps when and where my father and I usually ride are between 50-100 Degrees, it that makes a difference.
Zot Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I like to change trans & rear end oil every spring, regardless of milage, that way you see if there is any "smutz" on the drain plug magnet. As far as type of oil, whatever gives you that "warm fuzzy feeling".
Reddog900 Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Welcome Neighbor I have a 2000 1100Rt and change my fluids annually, mileage is not a consideration. I use regular dino oil in the engine and will change to synthetic shortly, I have about 19,000 miles on the bike. Redline Heavy Duty fluid in the tranny and rear drive unit. I changed to Redline at 12,000 miles and I like the feel of it in the gearbox. Ride Safe.
Yeeha! Stephen Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Oil is cheap... I change them every service.
Alfred von Campe Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I've been riding BMWs for almost 10 years, but only recently acquired my first new bike: a 2007 R1200RT (both previous bikes, a K75 and an R100RT, were purchased used). I'm going in for the break-in service next week, and among other things they are due to change the engine and final drive oil (in addition to adjusting the valve clearances and re-torquing the heads). They have quoted me just over $500 for this service: does this seem reasonable? I don't remember if they said that the transmission oil would also be changed. To get back to the original topic, I was planning to change the final drive oil anually, but I wasn't sure if the transmission oil should be changed more or less often. Also, how easy is it to do this yourself? I'm not very mechanically inclined, and all I have ever done on my bikes so far is to occasionally change the engine oil and filter. Alfred
Lawman Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 BMW says change final drive one time and never again.
MichiganBob Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Redline really took the clunk out of my tranny. Easier shifts. Bob
Mark K Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I change all of them at the same time every service or annually, whichever comes first.
Jim VonBaden Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Oil is cheap... I change them every service. Maybe, but it is wasteful, and hard on the enviroment. I change mine every 24K, trans and final drive. Engine oil every 6K. Jim

You shouldn't pay over $300! I do all my own, after the initial 600 mile service, and it is far less expensive, and simple to do. I did the 18K on my GF's R1200ST last night in about 90 minutes. Total cost: $26. Jim
sbouchet Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I use redline heavy shock proof in the final drive and the tranny for my 2000 r1100rt. I have 50000 miles and the shockproof oil improves the performance of the transmission. In the engine I use redline 15w50. I change all the fluids every 12 thousand miles. My Bike runs great and does not have any issue with overheating In NYC traffic.
Joe Frickin' Friday Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 BMW says change final drive one time and never again. Well, I changed my final drive at about 85,000 miles - when my original final drive died - so I guess I'm good to go! On a more serious note: I have always changed gearbox/FD oil in accordance with the manual, every 12K miles. After 100K miles, I've grown concerned about the health of the gearbox, so now I change its oil every 6K so I have more of a chance to examine the oil and the drainplug for signs of impending failure.

As you know, by the time you see it... You might consider an alternate plan of replacing the oil at the standard 12k intervals and having an oil analysis performed. It would cost slightly more ($20 for the analysis vs. $10 for the extra oil change) but you would get a much better insight into what is going on inside the transmission.

As you know, by the time you see it... Yeah, I know, if I'm seeing chunks in the oil, it's already screwed. The idea is not to stop the gearbox from dying, but to maybe save me from leaving on a long road trip with a compromised gearbox.
