CruisinCruzan
Just returned from an 1800 mile trip with my wife on my '06RT (bike was fully loaded). I had put on a set of Storm STs about 1500 miles before the trip. After finishing the trip I noted the tires (F and R) are distinctly flattened in the center with a significant ridge to the curved section. The tires were carefully balanced and inflated properly. Is this a function of riding fuly loaded and to be expected? Thanks for any info. Link to comment
smiller
Yeah, that's what a lot of relatively straight heavily-loaded miles will do for ya... Link to comment
OoPEZoO
unfortunatly yes......thats what happens. I haven't seen a tire yet that can withstand long touring miles without getting a flat spot. I have put almost 1000 miles on my new set of Storms since I put them on two weeks ago. So far, I love them. I commute about 120 miles per day. I've been riding the highway to work, and the backroads home. Mine have been wearing perfectly even. But like you noted......I'm riding solo with only my topcase full of random junk Link to comment
PhillyFlash
Same thing happens with most tires. Most of us spend much more time with the bike staight up than leaned over. Unless you live in the mountains and only take curvy roads, you can't avoid it. But don't worry about it. The tires should still handle well, especially when you're leaned over, as the sides will have lots of tread. Link to comment
kcscout
Just returned from an 1800 mile trip with my wife on my '06RT (bike was fully loaded). Can't help with the tires, but - um - you might not want to use "wife" and "bike was fully loaded" in the same sentence. Link to comment
CruisinCruzan
Thanks for the replies, as for "wife and fully loaded" we stopped hearing each other say things like that about 20 years ago. Link to comment

Can you compare to Metz Z6s? Yup.....I'm about 3000 miles into them now and I think they are great. They are wearing evenly in the rear, no cupping in the front, haven't slipped yet in the rain (and I rode through 3 HEAVY downpours in the last 2 weeks). I have no complaints at all. The turn in is MUCH quicker than the Z6......it felt uncomfortable at first, but I got used to it quickly, and the transition now feels very natural. I am a satisfied customer and I won't be going back to the Z6's Link to comment
Sidmariner
That is exactly what happened to mine. I just replaced them about a week ago. My mechanic pointed out that additional cupping and deformation had also occurred as the tire was worn down to the wear-bar. I had always been mindful of tire pressure, keeping them at 38 PSI for solo riding as indicated in the owners manual. His suggestion was to keep them at 42 PSI all the time...advice he had received from the manufacturer's rep. I replaced them with Metzeler ME880s. Acknowledging that I had been running on soft worn tires, I noticed a significant and immediate improvement in response and handling with the new tires. On the rear, the flat spot is much less pronounced and the bike just falls into a turn so much smoother now. Link to comment
PrinceAZ
I have a long term report on the Storms. I installed a set on my 06 RT at 5100 miles, replacing the Conti Road Attacks because they wore out. At 10,500 miles (5,500 elapsed) the Storms are going into the recycle bin. The mileage was no better than the Contis, but I noticed two things. First, the rear began stepping out at about 5k miles and the front has a pronounced ridge on the left-center of the tire which causes the bike to want to fall in at low speed. I can tolerate neither, but I loved the Azaros, putting 40k miles on them on my 1150 rt. So I am going to try the 021 'Stones next. My riding is 40% solo, 60% 2-up on Arizona grit pavement. Fugu
At the shop today - no word back from Avon on my front Storm. They have a good relationship w/ Avon and said it's possible Avon just took their word on the problem and didn't check it out. Also possible they verified the problem, but no reply. Rear storm was smooth at 5300 miles, no tread at all in the middle. Tiny bit of room to the outer wear bars, but it was definitely time. We need to merge all these threads, I'm going to post this in like 3 places, some of you will see it repeatedly. Link to comment
jfremder
I'm on my third front Storm. First one was fine. Second had low speed wobble when leaned over after 1000 mi. Third one (free replacement from AVON) has wobble from mile one at 45-48 mph when straight up. No more Storms for me. 1 out of three isn't good enough. Link to comment

Fugu
When's the next UT get together again? I think those brass knuckles are still in my tank bag.... I really didn't think we were sniveling in here, but I guess that's easy to say for me. Since this tire thing impacted my riding it's more important, you know... Link to comment

They are a super mileage tire, but after 12-14K miles of slab they would nearly stand up by themselves, there was such a flat spot... Steve in So Cal Link to comment
