Riding new ride from SFO to Memphis question

Hi, I have bought a '04 K1200GT and will pick up the bike this Friday in San Francisco and ride it back to Memphis.

I have my proof of insurance, Bill of Sale, and the title however, I'm a little concerned as to what might happen if I am pulled over. I am not sure if the owner will allow me to keep his old Calif plate on or not. If it is removed, won't I be open to scrutiny from LEO's along the way?

Thanks for your help...

Check with TN DMV to see if you can get a temporary tag. Many states have them for just this scenario. I had the same problem when I bought my RT in CT, I live in VA. Paid the DMV $5 for a temp tag that was good for a week or two.

I'd be sure to have plenty of hand guns ready. Don't slow down and just blast your way thru.

Or

Have all your papers together (sounds like you do), don't give 'em a reason to pull you over and be nice if you do.

I wouldn't use the old CA plate butt rather put a temp plate that says "In Transit".

I'm sure others will have suggestions.

Welcome Earle!

Unless things have changed in Kali, the plate goes with the bike and you are given a certain period after the sale to register the bike. Just ride home with the plate, your bill of sale and title are all the paperwork you need.

Whoa, that's even better news!

If I were you, I would go over to the Zumo board, ask there, plan a route through Utah, get a free night's lodging, and all the homebrew you and your GF can drink.... Let Bob make you a license plate and no worries.. lmao.gif

lmao.gifBob, I didn't know you was over here too! Good news, I got the last GT mount bracket from tourtech before they went out of stock. Should be here tomorrow, I guess I can use those maps to line the bird cage with now. If I had the time you know I would stop by. See you in Memphis in a few weeks. I'll call you on the road and let you know how this fine pony is doing.

On the way home from picking up our Exploder in NV, we got pulled over by a Wyoming state trooper. At that point we had a Nevada title in the seller's name endorsed to me, Illinois registration in the seller's name at a Nevada address, an expired Illinois plate, a bill of sale, and a filled-out copy of an Illinois application for plates in my name. There was no problem.

The plate goes with the bike in California unless it is a personalized plate. If you have the title signed over to you and proof of insurance issued in Tenn., you are good. (I'm from California)

Hello Earl..... I mean SCUMSHINE. I can ride escort part way with my R1100RT-P. I'll fire up the siren and strobes and make a run across Arkansas with you. If we get enough volunteers with old police bikes, you can probably have an escort from SFO to MEM...... whadya say?
