WURTY
After being cut off 3 times in one week on my quiet Suzuki Vstrom I have been thinking about noise to help the idiots notice me. Then I remembered the loud Harley I use to have was absolutely ttooooooo loud with that stinkin Thunder Header on it.. For my Vstrom I ordered a Stiebel compact air horn. 139 decibles but only when you push the button. Anyone else install one of these babies and had results ? Link to comment
Matts_12GS
Wurty, I have one on my DL650 and it is the shite for alerting them to your presence. I had something similar on my RT and a headlight modulator and people seemed to think that with the flashing light and my blue gear I was a LEO. I actually got pulled over in GA for having the modulator on one time.... Link to comment

Im not sure even that loud noise will help you. Today I was riding home from work when a day glow yellow fire truck with siren and horn blaring was coming from a side street on to a main road. Of course I heard and saw it and stopped (nervously looking in my mirrors for the cars behind me...none thankfully). But I noticed a Hummer coming up in the lane next to me not slowing. Yes....she was on the phone and almost t-boned the truck but swerved to the right and took out a Ford truck!!! How can someone not see or hear that? Stiebel and high viz is no guarantee. Ken H.
Yes, have the Stiebel horn on our GS as do several others of us. It will wake the dead. But not a cell phone talkin', latte drinkin', iTune jamin', smokin' SUV cage driver. For that nothing has been invented yet! Link to comment
HappyMan
I've found that those people not paying attention ignore anything you throw at them anyway. It doesn't matter if you've got lights flashing or horns blowing. They are not going to see you. Your only defense is a good offense and even then riding a motorcycle has it's risks that we are willing to take. I am a very defensive driver. I constantly watch my position and make sure people see me in their mirror. However, I know that even when they look up at me in their rear view that they will still cut me off. Quite frankly, I even notice that when I drive my cage that my sense of awareness is down. It really bugs me but being in a car can really lull you to sleep. Now take the fact that I'm aware of all of this and it can still happen to me and then take your average driver who probably can't figure out how to roll down a window with a manual crank and you can imagaine that these cars are nothing but a bunch of poorly guided missles just waiting to hit their target! kcscout
Stiebel horn was the first thing I added when I got my bike. I've used it a couple of times. Mostly after the fact. While it's reassuring to know I have it, a loud horn is no substitute for anticipating unaware drivers. Link to comment

pbbeck
Just got the Stebel on the GS last weekend. As noted here, it most likely will not be noticed by the clueless SUV driver. It sure will be nice to blast it ex post facto after the cager drifts into my lane. Classic Pavlovian conditioning! Link to comment

Bill_Walker
I've got one on my DL1000, too. Works great. Make sure you use a relay, it draws more current than the stock horn. Link to comment

Or maybe that'd be very low altitude air-to-air. To which of Garmin's GPSs do you suppose it'd be easiest to add a targeting display? Link to comment
kcscout
UPDATE: I "Stiebeled" (new verb) a cage this morning. She was rubbernecking a wreck on the other side of the road and casually drifted into half my lane. A short blast got her attention and got her back into her lane. Stiebeling works! Link to comment
moshe_levy
I've got two on my RT! Still, the usual disclaimers apply.... Here's a link to my installation (with sound clips) http://www.mklsportster.com/r1150rthorn.htm -MKL Link to comment
Fugu
I've got two on my RT! That's got to be great - a dual Stebel set up. I had one on my GS - only good if the cager's window was open or for signalling (I like to "beep beep" as I pass somebody just in case they are thinking about suddenly turning left...) Oh, and for friends' kids. Here Johnny, look at the neato motorcycle. Look at the yellow springs on the shock, aren't they HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONK! (kid runs away screaming) Link to comment
JonathanE
Yes, it works, and it's ugly enough to look good on a GS. It's not ugly enough to make you look good though. Link to comment

Anyone else install one of these babies and had results ? The first day I installed the Steibel it saved my bacon. A full sized Chevy panel van (lots of blind spots) while turning left beside me on a double lane left turn situation decided that it wanted my lane. One blast of that horn and he almost ended up in the ditch on the other side of the road because he reacted so quickly. Get one...you wont regret it. Shawn Link to comment
Silver Surfer/AKAButters
I'm embarassed to admit, but I will, I have only used my horn once, and that was to show displeasure to some low rider blaring his stereo so loud that it literally caused me physical discomfort while sitting at a long traffic light. This thing literally shook my skeleton. It hurt! I pulled up next to his window and laid on the horn right in his ear. He did'nt like it and flipped me off. I won't do it again, I was probably lucky that he did not pull out a gun or try to run me off the road, but it felt good at the time and he did lower his stereo. Link to comment

I saw a very similar thing once. A big bright yellow EMT vehicle with lights flashing, sirens wailing, and this moron in a cage just comes through the intersection pulling right across the EMT vehicles bow, then sees it and stops dead in the middle of the intersection the EMT is trying to cross. Then you heard from the EMT's speaker "Hey lady, wake the F*** UP!!!" A loud horn can be a good tool, but there's always going to be a certain segment of drivers who are just too clueless, self-absorbed, incompetent, and/or stupid to react to any outside stimuli. No matter how fool proof we try to make something nature will provide us with a bigger fool. Link to comment
