On my 96 R1100RT with 20k miles the clutch is slipping in 5th gear when you hit the throttle. Any thoughts, adjusting procedures? Thanks!

Do you have free play at the lever?

I would bet $100 you have a leaking input shaft seal. Check the back of the transmission for gear oil around the boot where the clutch lever actuates the clutch rod. There were a lot of '96's that were sent out with a scratched input shaft that would start a leak right around -you guessed it- 20,000 miles.

Hope I'm wrong.

It's the tranny seal from the input shaft. Had to replace the clutch assembly at 24K on my 2000RT. Same description as yours "the clutch is slipping in 5th gear when you hit the throttle" When it's hot out, even in 4th getting on it. Common problem I'm told.

You didn't answer Russell's question, "Do you have free play at the lever?"

Certainly proper adjustment of the clutch cable is the first thing to check.
