Solarguy01
Enjoying your posts very much. Only 15 days and my wife and I are making a return trip to AK- been nine years. My dad passed away last year and he and my mom rode to AK in 1956 on a 1955 Harley. 9000 miles in 3 weeks. Decided my dad needed on more trip to AK so he will be in the tank bag as we ride up there. Mom, my sister and both my kids will eventually meet up with us in Valdez. There, we will give dad his freedom from his traveling accomodations. A little fishing, some remembering and another great story of life. I am glad you are smoothing out those roads for us as our RT doesn't really like mud and s$#^. Have fun, looking forward to hearing more about your progress. You have made it alot of fun just following your adventures. Mike Link to comment
Jacqueline
I have had some time now to upload a few more pics from the past week: Members of BMWNEF at Hyder: Common sights on the Cassiar Highway: Cabin in Tok: Husky pups: Link to comment

Jacqueline
Wednesday Mark and I rode over to Alaska Leather to meet Barb and to sign a book that was talked about on ADVrider for riders coming to Alaska this summer to sign. A fun way of seeing who comes to Alaska, from where, on what, but no Barb and no book . Barb is at a Rally in Texas, the book????? I did meet several of Barb’s employees. Mark checking out some of the goods: I was given this neat sticker, which I will put on my Jesse bags once I have touch them up. I’m after this look: Bil Reid’s Jesse bags. We then rode over to the House of Harley, where I was given the nickel tour….. Yes I even got to go into the shop! Met a lot of nice people that work there; And also some frequent visitors. Then we were across the street for something to eat at Gwennie's. It’s well known. No fun The fun continues....... Link to comment
Jacqueline
I had heard the BMW Shop in Anchorage was hard to deal with….. I heard right. I had called them to ask about having my fork seal repaired. I was given a date three weeks out. When I asked if they might do it sooner as I was from out-of-town I was told they would call me back. They never called. Maybe they heard I was in town for a while . So Thursday I found my way over to the Dealership to purchase the seals. I am now trying to get into a shop in Wasilla for the repair and another set of tires before I head to Dawson City in Yukon. My tires are showing wear and the road to Dawson will require better tires . I might have to have my pit crew (Bill and Richard) fly up here for that . Friday evening the House of Harley was having a Sport Bike night. I rode over with Mark and his brother Corbin both on Ducati’s, and a couple on a Busa . I saw some pretty amusing riding done in the back lot that night. I’m going to see if I can get a couple of lessons….. (what do you think Bill and Richard D.?) The Dyno Tune was a hit with all the guys as they watched a demo. And the big door prize for the evening was a certificate for a free Dyno-Tune……… you guessed it! I won it!!!!!!! This Dealership is great they even offer free camping in its back lot ( a grassy area)(Kaneman you may want to keep that in mind.). We met these two riders from GA who were busy setting up camp for the night. They had flown in earlier in the day and picked up their rented bikes. They were excited about their adventure and discovering Alaska for a few weeks. Closing time and time to put the bikes to bed..... Just another great day . Link to comment
Jacqueline
Saturday I was up early and rode over to Campbell Creek Science Center for National Trails Day . The Science Center is a wonderful place and there were plenty volunteers out cleaning up trails. Then it was to West Delaney Park for 5th Annual Alaska Oceans Festival. This young guy did not last long on this wild fish ride….. And wanted so much to try it . This sign was in the middle of the Festival and I thought it sad that two blocks away is this Reindeer…. In this cage next to a very nice house in downtown Anchorage…… REI was set up with a large 25,000 gallon pool where children were being introduced to the sport of kayaking. I had the pleasure of meeting California artist Peggy Oki. She is the person behind this amazing 5 foot high, 400 foot-long “Curtain of 30,000 Origami Whales” assembled from origami whales contributed worldwide. This exhibit had been on display earlier this week in Anchorage during the International Whaling Commission meetings. I believe this was the first time the International Whaling Commission had met on American soil…. When I rode into downtown Anchorage on Tue. I noticed all the law enforcement officers and wondered what was up. Whaling is a very hot topic with a lot of people working hard to stop Commercial Whaling so they (the Whales) will be around for many years to come. This picture does not give the impact of this flag pool. This flag pool is in the Park in downtown Anchorage and is a HUGE Sitka Spruce with a globe on the top. It is very impressive and fitting for Alaska. While in the park I also observed the largest kite I have ever seen. The man flying it handled it well and seems to enjoy it…as did I. Make a note if you’re coming to Anchorage bring your kite! I left mine back in Florida, so I’ll be purchasing another soon! This handsome guy is Benny! Isn’t all 165 lbs. of him beautiful? Again these pictures do not show what a truly beautiful dog he is. More to see and do .... more places to ride Link to comment

Richard_D
Jacqueline, Quite often a very small piece of dirt can be what is making your fork seal leak. Maybe you can find help from a friend up there and use a very thin feeler guage and slip it in between the fork and the seal and go all around the fork to possibly clean the dirt out. This may solve your problem. Also look and see if they have covers to protect that area from dirt. Link to comment

Jacqueline
Sunday I rode to downtown Anchorage and enjoyed some culture. There was plenty going on downtown and something for everyone. I stopped by the Market to view some of the wears for sale. Most items are made locally. The Alaska Brass was playing in the park entertaining spectators with their Big Band Sound. They played one of my favorites… Pennsylvania 6-5000 by Glenn Miller…. Then I was over to see the Wild Salmon on Parade… I think it is very common now for Cities to have local artist work their magic on sculptures to help raise money for various things. Fitting for Anchorage, they do Salmon. www.wildsalmononparade.com Here are just a few they had on display Beautiful….. My Favorite (yes this fish is about to bit her nose off ) After enjoying a nice dinner with the three Haldane brothers (a fiancé and a niece), I rode with Mark and Corbin to Girdwood. The ride to Girdwood is one of my favorite places in Alaska….. the Seward Highway along Cook Inlet and Turnagain Arm. Just BEAUTIFUL! A few pics taken at Beluga Point If you time it right you can see the pods of Beluga Whales coming down Turnagain Arm…. But not this time….. I did see some Dall Sheep high on the mountain above us. They are the white spots in this pic….. We met Alan at Beluga Point…. He was happy to talk motorcycles with Mark and Corbin. (Mark) Then it was the Ice Cream Shop a favorite place for riders to stop and hang for a while. I enjoyed talking with Doug.... And Jim.... (I understand he has a pretty fast Busa I guess in the winter they can't ride them up here so they work on them ). Mark introduced me to Judy…. What a sweet and interesting person. Wonderful people, beautiful places, Link to comment

Jacqueline
Monday evening Mark got me out for dirt road riding…. an area that I need a LOT of work . Mark is surprised I made it to Anchorage with so little (no) ability to ride in dirt/gravel . He said to let you all know…. Do not send anyone else up to Alaska that can’t ride in the dirt/gravel . Mark was great and patient with me…. In a dirt parking he had me doing figure eights and going as slow as possible with my feet up . I worked up a sweat. That is Anchorage off in the distance. Jacqueline
A small sky area on top the mountain where we rode. An interesting cloud.... I am going to try and practice everyday in the dirt, which should be easy seeing that there are so many dirt/gravel roads here. Link to comment
Jacqueline
To get a feel for the road to Hatcher Pass look here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=236435 these are some of the pics that were shot that morning. It is beautiful up there.... It's area where several gold mines are. Yes, big into leathers with the sport bikes. Now remember I'm still in Anchorage...it doesn't get hot here! It MAY hit 70 in the summer. Link to comment
Whip
I meant leather is warmer than the textile stuff....maybe that's why they all wear leather. Love the pix Thanks Whip Link to comment

JonathanE
Yes, big into leathers with the sport bikes. Now remember I'm still in Anchorage...it doesn't get hot here! It MAY hit 70 in the summer. Actually, when I was there it was in the low 90's. I assumed that it's like that every summer! Anchorage was much warmer than Kenai, Seward, Denali, even Talkeetna and Tok. None of this should be too surprising. I need to go back some day soon. Your pictures are reminding me how much I loved that part of the world. I need a house in Chile and a house in Alaska and a GS to travel between them each year. At least I've got the GS. Link to comment
Jacqueline
Enjoyed a ride to Eklutna State Park. Eklutna Lake is very blue and created from the runoff from Knik Glacier. A beautiful place to hike, bike, four wheel, or just sit and enjoy the sights and listen to the wind rustle the trees. This guy had a mind of his own….. The two women just keep yelling at him and he just was not going to listen…… I have seen many moose since I have been in Alaska, but I have been unable to photograph them. More than 1,600 moose live in the city of Anchorage, showing up in neighborhoods and downtown. They share dozens of scenic trails with outdoor enthusiasts. I have been reading and hearing about many sighting of mothers and their calves. Today while riding back from Girdwood (love that ride) I was able to get these pictures: The babies are so cute. Look at those sweet faces. The mother was drinking fresh water that was running down the mountain. What magnific animals. Link to comment
