KrazyHorse
"Three simple things: priorities, patience, and passion" I'm making progress on the first one, defintiely need work on the second one, and I have tons of the third. Thanks so much for the advice. I think I am going to write that down and tacxk it to my computer. My husband and I are currently in the process of taking control of our finances and learning to be more reposnsible, so your words are very timely for me. But back to today's events: Rock on girlfriend!!!!!!! My three year old and I just did the happy dance for you as promised. Btw, I hope you keep posting on your return trip, whenever that maybe. Ray (Skyking) suggested we get a bunch of the Chromeheads (and whoever else wants to join us) to escort you back into FL. That is if you'll have us. Link to comment
JonathanE
It's now the day after, which means that you mujst be suffering from the afteraffects of being "Hyderized". Here's hoping it doesn't hurt too bad! Where you going from Hyder, Jackie? Whichever way you go, have a great ride and enjoy the people you meet when the bike is parked. Link to comment

Hope you enjoy your trip. Watchout for the moose. I met a fellow who hit one and said it was like hitting a dumpster on stilts, kinda ruined his GS. Mike I came around a turn in the northern half of the Cassiar, and saw a moose a few hundred yards away, just standing in the middle of the road. I stopped. I waited. I got tired of waiting. I assumed that the stupid "dumpster" on hooves was probably asleep, standing in the middle of the Cassiar Highway, which admittedly doesn't get much traffic. So, I turned my bike around (just in case he/she charged once it was awakened) and blew my air horns. Some of y'all have heard them. The beast awoke, and stumbled off the road. I never got closer than 100 yards to it, which was just about perfect. They look kinda cool, but I don't know if they can be trusted or not. Link to comment
upfisk
Jacqueline, now that you're in Alaska you might as well know that there are "10 men for every woman" and while "the odds are good the goods are rather odd". I spent my first 34 years up there and left with an imported man, rather than one of the local mountain men. The BMW dealer in Fairbanks is good at working travelers into his schedule as is the Anchorage dealer. Have fun. Link to comment

SANTA
i've heard them called other things, and have called them other things but "dumpster on Hooves" well now that is funny... came around a corner once and 2 were standing in the middle of the road, early spring, they like to lick the salt on the pavement, give them the horn long and hard to get them moving them just sort of slid by on my half of the road... they can be bullied, just not in the rutt... WBoyter
Hey Jacky it was good to get a chance to meet you and swig a cup of coffee. Didn't mean to leave you all in the dust (literally); I thought that you all were getting on the road behind me, and when I didn't see you after a few minutes I figured we'd meet up down the road when I refueled in Teslin. I pulled into Teslin to the pump, and a RCMP pulled up on the other side. I got my fuel and got the hell out so I wouldn't be stuck either right in front or right behind the man all the way to Whitehorse for the next two hours. I did stay at the Yukon Motel though. Good luck on your travels. Link to comment
Jacqueline
I crossed over into Canada late on Wednesday evening through Surry….. The boarder crossing went without a hitch. The Boarder Official thought my trip an aggressive undertaking….. It was getting late but I wanted to make my way as far into Canada as I could before calling it a night….Like San Francisco, I got to close to Vancouver before I knew it and again I became a log in a log jam . Just went with the flow…..it was late, dark and I was tired. I felt like I was in another country…. The road signs were different, and I found it difficult to tell what road/route I was on. No big deal… found a place to spend the night and in the morning I would figure it out. In the morning I knew I wanted to go north…just needed to find a road going in that direction. Found route 99. Now 99 has some beautiful scenery along to coast and would be a great road to ride another time. It appeared the winter had been a very, very rough winter for the road. Many, many road slides, rough road, and numerous delays was workers work on what looked like a year long project getting the road back in shape. At the last gas stop before Hyder I meet a couple riding two up on a 1200 GS and we ride the last 160 miles to Hyder together. Starting about 45 miles before Hyder we start seeing bears. We saw 12 in total, 9 black bears, and three brown or grizzly bears. One of the black bears had two very small cubs…cute. It appeared that most were at the road side looking for food. One of the black bears was down over the road and as I rode by lifted his headed with his mouth full of what looked like dandelion greens. The bear looked like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar. I was not able to get any pictures of these bears, but I’m sure I will have plenty of opportunity. I arrived in Hyder, Alaska Friday afternoon….. Four riders out of Jacksonville, FL were suppose to be here….. and I was in need of a familiar face (after leaving Torrey and everyone it’s been difficult adjusting to being alone again). I got checked in and thought I’d walk a little, when Larry shouted out my name. It's nice to know someone in the crowd . Saturday morning I got up to do a little exploring of the town, on foot. Not a big place… I was told here were 57 people here all winter. This is Joseph. He is a Maine Coon Cat, isn’t he just beautiful! Joseph loves to be held……but he is an arm full! Joseph is the first cat that I have seen with nail covers! Cool! They have found a way to protect the furniture without having to de-claw! A Mountain Men of Hyder….. Buildings of Hyder A little bit of heaven.. The fog was heavy that morning over the bay….. But it lent to the mood, the mystic, and the awe of Alaska. I had this place all to myself….not a sole around….. I took in the beauty, the sights, the sounds….birds, ducks, Canadian geese, water rushing off the mountains and into the bay, the fresh crisp air…. and I cried. Link to comment

hindsight
Sorry it has taken me so long to provide these photos of our lovely Hoon on the loose from the little gathering in Torrey. As she mentioned, a small group of us took off after the Gleno Memorial on a dirt road to one of the lookouts over Cathedral Valley. It was this little excursion where a certain F650GS saw its side more than once. The following picture is proof that Tom was nowhere near Jacqueline when she fell. However, when trying to pick up her bike, he was trying some Jedi mind trick to push it back over with his right hand in the air. What's up with that? This is where Tom, Mr. and Mrs. Whip, and Josh ended the dirt adventure, but the rest of us pushed on. Once at the top of the overlook, the lightning started to crash around us and I did not want to be tallest thing on the mountain all wired into a running motorcycle so Debi and I headed back down the hill. While waiting at the bottom, Debi took the following sequence of pics. Richard is coming down first on Killers KLR 650. Followed by Jacqueline and Roadscholar. Looking good so far, but right after this picture was taken, the front end of the F650 started to wash out. First left, then right, and the bike goes down on its left side. Now understand, this was at the steepest part of the hill and in the middle of the two tracks the gravel was not compacted down. As Richard came down, we signaled that something had happened back on the hill and you should have seen his eyes. They got great big and he flipped the KLR around and flew back up the hill. In my opinion, the camaraderie and scenery made up for any of my concerns of riding the dirt roads two-up. It was well worth the adventure and I hope Jacqueline feels the same. Go J Go!! Jacqueline
Hyder was great fun. Riders came in from all over. I believe the head count was 156. I did catch up with four fellow riders / club members (BMW Owners of North East Florida): Larry Bil Don Martin Also met Randy S. friends Wiz Clause Randy If you ever get to Hyder be sure to eat at the Bus! Great fresh fish. The tale is the family drove the bus up to Hyder from some where and it would not go any farther. Father and Son go out and catch fish, while Mom runs this cool restaurant out of the bus. Here is she is hard at preparing my lunch. Saturday evening was great with many riders getting recognized for the 48 plus! Way to go Riders!!!! Not sure I could ever do that….. I have this thing about stopping to smell the wild flowers . Sunday morning I headed out of Hyder with three of the four riders out of Jacksonville. We were headed to Whitehorse! The Carriar Highway was a challenge. The dirt road “training” I had in AZ with Tom and in Torrey with the group really paid off. (Everyone thought I was out for a joy ride on those dirt roads , I was out to learn! I did and it really helped.) The Carriar Highway offered everything and anything you can imagine…. Pavement, gravel, dirt, wet dirt (more like goose sh%$), straight road, curves, swipes, whoop de dos, holes, washboard, you name it, it had it….. and breathe taking scenery (that was difficult to find areas to stop and take pics). We were only on the road for 100 miles before I learned that my bike could not handle running the moto lights and my Gerbing’s at the same time . You guest it, I killed the battery in the middle of no where ! Martin tried to jump my bike with his RT….. we couldn’t get my battery charged. Then Martin, Larry and Don tried to pop the clutch to get it going… which did not work. As luck would have it an over sized pickup came by and stopped and I was able to use my little jumper cables with success! On our way through BC we came to Cassiar Mountain Jade Store in Jade City where 90% of the worlds jade is mined. We stopped there, but not without incidence… . The parking lot entrance was heavy gravel and yes once again I went down on the right side ! The Jesse bags held up. I felt like the bike was getting mad at me, as this time I flew off it . Again I was not hurt! Larry helped me get the bike up…and I will just say we did not get out of that parking lot before one of the other riders need help in picking up his bike also. It was a given that we were going to arrive in Whitehorse late, so we stopped for something to eat. We had just ordered when Wayne Boyter walks in. It is really something how you can be in the middle of nowhere and come across another BMWsporttouring member! I could have ridden on Monday with the three from Jacksonville, but I decided to ride by myself. They were on a mission to get to Prudhoe Bay and I was out to enjoy and savor my ride to Anchorage. The ride was more of the same as the day before…… gravel, dirt, goose sh$#, curves, whoop de dos, etc. I found even with the challenge of the road I was more relaxed riding by myself and at times I was riding too fast. I’d hit bad part of the road sending me up in the air and off the bike, luckily coming back down on the bike…wheels down. Yep, bad fork seal . That night I stayed in Tok. I rented a neat little cabin…. In the morning I met a couple from Florida that were also staying in one of the cabin. They had been stranded in Tok for two days at that point. The road had not been kind to them. They had ruined two tires on their SUV and were unable to locate replacements. The road between Tok and Anchorage proved to be better, but there were still several delays due to road construction. I arrived in Anchorage shortly after 3:00 pm… and was trying to find my way to REI where I was going to meet up with Mark (from the ADVrider forum). I was going in circles unable to find Northern Lights Blvd, when I heard a car horn and looked over to find Mark beside me in his vehicle. Link to comment

roadscholar
Jacqueline, Ironically Richard D and I were just lamenting over the fact that we'd sent you off without enough off-road training/practice, but glad to see you're succeding at it, albeit trial by fire. Whoop de doos, huh? Guess you're just getting Jaded. Glad those four Florida dudes all finally made it, but I did notice a disturbing trend, they all have white beards.
