Francois_Dumas
Amazing pictures all of them... I'd be worried about the bisons too... AND about bears (I am honest!)..... I just LOVE the teddybear variety but have some reservations about all the rest The rockies pictures (and especially glaciers) are wonderful. Hope they will sill be there in a couple years, would love to see them myself. Heck, ALL of it, come to think of it ! But if I won't make it, at least I have your pictures and story. Oh, the most amazing thing however is that 'camper' trailer.... it wouldn't even fit on the road in Europe !!!! Nina and I don't like camping, but those things could sway me... they look bigger and more luxurious than our HOUSE !! Wow !! And yes, I too believe there are still more GOOD people out there than bad. Unfortunately the bad ones make the good ones hide so often these days Link to comment
Gary in Aus
Francois, the Canadian Rockies are a magnificent part of the world and worth the effort. The North American Bison is a strange looking animal up close all head and shoulders and tapering to a small rear quarters. When we drove into Yellowstone National Park about 15 years ago from West Yellowstone , from memory, not far after you have entered the park , you come to an open "meadow" and a carparking area on the left . We stopped at this point because across the creek in this meadow was a herd of bison, about 50 metres away, so put on the telephoto lense, took so many photos and discussed with other travellers in the carpark about how lucky we were to get so close and that it was probably best that the bison were on the other side of the creek to us for safety reasons. We got back into the car and drove for a couple more kilometres when after rounding a bend in the road there would have been at least 50 bison laying on the road and a ranger was moving them on so cars could pass. We wound down the windows of the car and my daughters were "patting" them as we drove past, one of them even put his face through the open window. They have a smell that is probably only appreciated by a few hardy individuals. Jacquelines journey has made logging on worthwhile as has the trip through Germany retracing his fathers footsteps, both are outstanding for so many reasons Link to comment
Paul_Burkett
This has been a truly wonderful adventure chronicled through the eyes and lens of a woman who is getting even more adept in reflecting her world as she sees it. The pictures of the giant mountains and delicate flowers bring into perspective a more balanced picture for us to see. Often times we view the world on a grandiose scale with huge mountains and reflections on huge lakes, but often I am allowed to see the small and obtuse bits of nature that make up the rest of this great planet that we call home. Jacqueline, I commend you again on the wonderful job you have done taking us on your adventure. You can do it again next year if you want. Link to comment
Jacqueline
A few more pictures from Canada….. These guys were on the shoulder of the road so I stopped to take a few pictures….. This one walked within 6 to 8 feet of me sitting on my bike….. He also sent people running back to their vehicles…. Route 3 in Canada was a beautiful route….. One I would recommend to anyone. In some way it reminded me of the Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway. I crossed the boarder in Osoyoos, BC / Oroville, WA. This is the most beautiful boarder crossing I have been over. The boarder was in the middle of wonderful groves and vineyards….. My ride through Canada was wonderful…..even though my luck with the weather seem to run out, I had four afternoons of heavy rain which limited my views but the areas badly needed the rain (many had wild fires burning). It was all good! In Washington once again…..(8/20/07) I had my bike serviced at Ride West BMW in Seattle where I had to have the back break pads replaced. I have a broken frame bolt….. one that they did not have in stock . Again my experience with Ride West BMW was nothing but great!!! Wonderful people! :clap Link to comment

Jacqueline
Unable to spend the time in Oregon or Washington that I wanted to (due to the fact I wanted to be in Hyder, Alaska for Hyder Seek) so I took the opportunity now! WOW!!!!! How could I go through Washington without stopping to see Mount St. Helens? What an amazing place, what energy came from deep inside the earth; “Shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, the north face of this tall symmetrical mountain collapsed in a massive rock debris avalanche. Nearly 230 square miles of forest was blown down or buried beneath volcanic deposits. At the same time a mushroom-shaped column of ash rose thousands of feet skyward and drifted downwind, turning day into night as dark, gray ash fell over eastern Washington and beyond. The eruption lasted 9 hours, but Mount St. Helens and the surrounding landscape were dramatically changed within moments. In 1982, the President and Congress created the 110,000-acre National Volcanic Monument for research, recreation, and education. Inside the Monument, the environment is left to respond naturally to the disturbance.” The evidence of the mass distraction is clear to see…. It’s really something to see the distraction yet at the same time see the beauty that is a result…… Nature….. the cycle of life…… it brings to mind the phase “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven” After Mount St. Helens it was off to see Mount Rainier National Park! WOW!!!!! Tom, I got my National Parks Passport Stamped! A mountain wonderland famous for its dense forests, dazzling wildflowers meadows, tremendous snowfields, and rugged glaciers. As an active volcano Mount Rainier stands as a reminder of the beauty and power of nature. WOW!!!!! Link to comment

Jacqueline
Yes, at this time I am in Fayetteville, WV at the UN Rally, with about 100 of the best people anyone could know! But my story continues from where I left off …. In the great state of Washington; Made my way back into Oregon……….. Where I rode down 101 along the Pacific Coast…………………………….. What a fantastic road, and what beautiful seascapes. The road was not very wide and in most places did not have much (if any) of a shoulder. It appears the road was popular with the RV/camper owners and bicyclists. It’s not a road I’d like to take on a bicycle… I wouldn’t be able to relax enough to enjoy it……. And back into BEAUTIFUL California…. Link to comment

Jacqueline
Being so close, I had to return to California for another look at those wonderful Redwoods……. Before heading back into Oregon (the interior) and I about died when I hit the heat. I am so glad I had my mesh gear sent to me before I left Alaska…. But the heat was still hard for me to handle.... more to see back in Oregon...... Link to comment
Jacqueline
Back in Oregon, I met up with Richard (BeniciaRT-GT)… he had been successful in talking me into going to the UN Rally and I was going to ride across the country with him…. (if our riding styles could blend long enough to get us there). We found a great place for lunch…. “The Pink House” in Cottage Grove, OR…. The food was wonderful and the portions HUGE…. This is a “small” chef salad…. WOW! I had to see the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area before I left this state (one more time)….. The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular river canyon cutting the only sea-level route through the Cascade Mountain Range, with the north canyon walls in Washington and the south canyon walls in Oregon. Spectacular!!!!!!! Views from the Crown Point and the Vista House Link to comment

Jacqueline
We stopped along the Historic Columbia River Highway to enjoy the sunset… Getting hungry it did not take us long to find a great place for dinner….. I’d recommend it to everyone….. http://www.tadschicdump.com/photos.htm it alone would be worth the ride… but with the beauty of the roads and the landscapes of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area it’s a grand slam!!!! It is nestled on the banks of the Sandy River in Troutdale, Oregon and it’s only twenty miles east of Portland. The outside walls are actually glass doors/windows that fold back and invite the outside in….. We had to have the Chicken’n Dumplins…. wonderful… (and very filling). I have never seen such large dumplins before . Link to comment
Jacqueline
More views of Oregon… If you ever get to Enterprise, Oregon you must stop and spend the night with Jack & Judy Burgoyne at The Historic Enterprise House Bed & Breakfast; www.enterprisehousebnb.com We stumbled upon this lovely 1910 Victorian style home, once we met Jack & Judy and saw their gracefully decorated home (with old style charm), we had to stay. Within walking distance is a Microbrewery with wonderful beer, local wines, wonderful food, and enjoyable customers where we enjoyed dinner…… (this picture will not coporate..it will not turn) Breakfast was a grand affair….. (almost to grand for the likes of two bikers) A swing on the swing in the front yard….. then it was down the road to Joseph and views of Hells Canyon. On the way we came upon a real live cattle drive…… Get’em up, move’em out, rawhide! WOW!!!! It was an open range area, and they were rounding up the herd….. Two “Cowboys” and about five working dogs……. headed right for us. We pulled over and stopped, I had shut off my bike and got off (to take pictures) when one of the “Cowboys” said he wanted us to keep coming. Back on the bike, we continued forwarded and the cattle started to scatter…. The “Cowboys” whistled and the dogs went to work rounding the herd back up. WOW!!!!! I had never seen herding dogs at work, they were GREAT!!!! Hells Canyon was established by Congress Dec. 31, 1975, contains 215,000 acres of wilderness, and has three rivers which are designated “WILD and Scenic”; the Snake River, the Imnaha River, and the Rapid River. Time to head north to Glacier National Park..... Link to comment

Jacqueline
Idaho... Some of the greenest hay I have ever seen……. On my trip I have seen a lot of bears but these are the first that I have been able to photograph. Yes, Momma is looking right at me!!!!! A wonderful little town that should not be missed is Riggins, Idaho and Route 12, Lolo Pass. This sign almost says it all! Montana The first stop is the BMW Dealer …. Big Sky BMW in Missoula …. Called ahead the week before to order the frame bolt that is broken on my bike. Actually requested and paid for express shipment on the bolt and was told it would be there the afternoon I arrived….. NO BOLT!!!!!! The Parts Department had messed up the order and the bolt was not there. The Service Department thought they might be able to do something for me still, but soon realized they could not. On a scale of 1 to 10; I give the Parts Department a 1 and the Service Department an 8 for an over-all total of 4.5 . (as of today the bolt is still broken, and is scheduled to be replaced tomorrow in Lynchburg, VA). Montana was hot so I wore my mesh gear…. By the time the sun started going down it got cold….. not wanting to mess around with trying to get my mesh jacket secure on the bike I just put my regular riding jacket right over my mesh jacket…. I felt like a quarterback with all the padding…… Link to comment
Jacqueline
Glacier National Park….. the first International Peace Park (between Canada and the US) and one of the most ecologically diverse parts of the Rocky Mountain West. The Park represents a vision of a world in which peoples set aside their differences and work together in the interest of all life. This Park (scared place) is a living embodiment of hope. It was here (in the West) that I realized there were/are so many more different Tribes of Indiana then I knew. Tom I got the stamp and so did someone else…… So many people had told me about Going-to-the-Sun Road; A beautiful road for riding … but there seemed to be no place that the road was not at some angle and was a challenge for me when I stopped, which made it a little nerve wrecking (not to mention I felt like I was going to be pushed over by someone ….not on purpose….. I did make my point and was given more room .) We stopped at a parking area to take a few pictures and explore. We spotted this mother Mountain Goat and her kid high on this mountain. look in the middle at the top of the ridge. The Mountain Goat’s hooves are well adapted to this rocky habitat. Their hooves have a sharp outer rim and a rubbery sole that provides excellent traction on steep, smooth surfaces. Not to mention their solid legs and bodies… look like pure muscle to me. We walked back to the parking lot to find…. another Momma…. and her kid…… CUTE!! BEAUTIFUL!! SOLID!! WOW!! A crowd gathered to watch them and they started moving….towards my bike…. . But they soon realized there was one there that they liked better… . It appeared something (soda maybe) had been poured on the ground under Richard’s bike. It was amazing to watch Momma just step up on that wall…… .. I love her eyes!!!! BEAUTIFUL! Next more of Glacier…………… Link to comment

Someone from the ADV rider board said that was what it was and he has seen it often . Had I known that or even thought that, I would have run them off. At the time we thought it was water running out of Richard's camelback sitting on the bike. But later realized it had not been leaking . I can only hope that was not enough to do them harm. I wonder what can be done to stop this from continuing ....... I may have a new mission in life! Kirsten, this is right up your line of work; any thoughts? Link to comment

Why (and HOW!) would anti-freeze leak from cars !?? That's inside the radiators, isn't it? I'd figure it would be moisture dripping from all the airco's that cars have these days. That would be harmless.... just water. On another note: goats can eat just about ANYTHING and it doesn't seem to bother them Link to comment
tallman
HI Francois, Unfortunately, over here, many drivers operate vehicles that leak, ooze, and leave evidence of this behind them. Most parking lots have mixtures of oil, transmission fluid, anti-freeze, brake fluid, air-conditioning condensation, soda, and other non-descript fluids that find low spots, mix or congregate, wait for rain and then escape. Evaporation leaves traces of this pollution. It is impossible to avoid. JACK Link to comment

Jacqueline
Going through Montana we stopped and visited with Ernie and Edee. Several months back while on a trip on his LT, Ernie had a problem with the back tire and Richard had come to his rescue. They have a small farm where Edee enjoys her passion…. Horses. A wonderful couple that has it figured out and are living the love life in Montana! Views of Montana……on the way to Yellowstone National Park…….. Wheat fields that have been harvested. Beartooth Highway..... what a road ....can you say switchbacks! "The first 15 miles out of Red Lodge takes you from the canyon floor and climbs almost 4,000 feet in elevation, taking you past Precambrian rock slides and red and yellow rock outcroppings. Expect hairpin curves, U-curves, and sinuous S-curves in the road as you climb to the canyon rim past forests, rugged cliffs, pristine lakes, mountain peaks, and alpine tundra. At 45 miles in length, you cross the highest point in the Beartooth Highway at 10,974. Here, you leave Montana and enter Wyoming. The descent takes you along switchbacks which meander through rolling hills saturated with lakes, forests, and wildlife." BEAUTIFUL!!!!! This mountain really had my attention...and I got to enjoy it from many sides and elevations as we worked our way up and over the pass! Link to comment
