azkaisr
I cant wait to get my autograph on the book you are going to write. (you are, arent you??) I have enough material to write several books . What I share here is only a fraction..... . Whip, your welcome for the moose pic's . I'm still looking for Bear! I may have to go back to Hyder, they all seem to be down there. And yes, men, men, and more men...... there's something about a BMW F650GS. Tom, you can ride or fly on up and see me also. Just don't go pushing anything/anyone else over . Not that I ever did push anyone over is what I am sure you meant to say. I am not going to look at this as a truce violation otherwise I would ask why you are taking pictures of boyscouts when it was supposed to be Mountain.... And I may just sneak up there and visit you yet! Tom Link to comment
Jacqueline
On Friday 7/06 I rode Hatcher Pass again…… This time the wildflowers were out in full bloom….. One of my favorite flowers……. Daisies every where….. Views of the Little Susitna River….. Just beautiful. I could have sat on the bank all afternoon and just listened to the calming sounds of the great outdoors……. But I was off to the Museum of Alaska Transportation & Industry in Wasilla…. What a fanatic Museum… It was full of Planes….. Trains…… Automobiles….. Snow machines…… Boats……. Farm equipment……. Road equipment.... Even this Pink thing….. But not a single Motorcycle???????? I asked the very nice lady who took my admission fee if I missed the motorcycle(s). She said “no” and suggested that I make comment of that fact in their comments book….. so I did (in a very nice way). I was really surprised there was not at least one; I have been told that Alaska has the most motorcycles per capita….. and from what I have seen…. I believe it. Link to comment

Jacqueline
The Northern Riders BMW Club held a BBQ on Sat. 07/07/07, which I was invited to. What do they have at a BBQ in Alaska….. Salmon, Reindeer dogs, and hamburgers. The food was delicious and the company was great. They gave out door prizes and I was given a very nice pair of BMW gloves for coming the longest distance, as well as a club shirt, pin, and a sticker for my bike. Thank you so much!!!! On my way back to Anchorage I stopped by Eklutna Village Historical Park, the oldest continuously inhabited Athabaskan settlement in the area, with colorful Spirit Houses built over graves. On Monday 07/09/07 I hopped on the bike and headed out to find Hope, Alaska. On the road to Hope... (so many RV's ) Hope was one of the original gold rush towns founded in 1889. The town (camp) was named after a 17 year old prospector, Percy Hope. Hope still holds a charm from the early days…. And as I rode into town, the air was full with the sweet small of wild roses The turn-of-the-century log Social Hall still host community meetings, dances and weddings. Hope is a town for opportunists and adventurers. It's wonderful to find places still without a McDonalds or a Wal-Mart ..... Link to comment
motorman587
Miss Jacqueline, I saw some where that you stated were not ready or did not want to do the haul road, can remember which. Not a bad thing, but... You need to do it. It will be something that you will take from Alaska and keep with you. I am glad that I did it and having kept up with your post where you travelled that one road towards Inuvik, Canada. You have the "will" and the "guts" and the motor that can do it. I wish I could show you the pictures from the haul road that I took, but I computer dumby. I also know, if you went, you would take such great pictures to post. The haul road is not that bad. The worst to me was between Fairbanks and Yukon River bridge, closer the bridge, construction zone, and I was on an LT. Anyhow, love the updates and pictures like the rest of us. Enjoy, and wish I was back up there. Link to comment
Jacqueline
Where ya stayin now???? Are ya still workin for Barb some??? You gonna change my tires and oil when I get there??? Whip Whip, I am back in Anchorage for now. I have a house sitting / cat sitting gig for the next three weeks. It will allow me to stay in out of the cold …yes its cold up here …. And I can take short trip. I will also be helping Barb out again. Barb is such a super person . And Whip yes, I’d be more than happy to change your tires and oil!!!! I may be a little slow; I don’t know your bike like I know mine . Jacqueline, your bike will be ready for the museum soon. Rich, I was thinking the same thing!!!! It might be a fitting end for the bike when the time comes !!! I spent today cleaning her up and she still looks pretty good for what she has been through. It really the Jesse bags that have taken the beating…. And I’m covering them with stickers from places she been. Miss Jacqueline, I saw some where that you stated were not ready or did not want to do the haul road, can remember which. Not a bad thing, but... You need to do it. John, I did the harder highway (the Dempster) so I should be able to handle the Haul Road . I know I can if the weather is right and my mind set is right. In fact I’m getting ready to go meet Curtis (the gentlemen I rode the Dempster with) at Barb’s house. Now that I’m rested, if he is going to do the Haul Road sometime in the next month…… I very well may be right there with him. Link to comment

keithb
Jacqeeee I LOVE the pics of the old snow machines and the piece of road equipment. Classic stuff there for sure. That road equipment piece was used in an old WWII movie I just saw recently. Don't recall the name. The British were searching for a spy in their midst and of course they found out who he was at the end. As they were flying out of Germany the spy ended up jumping out of the plane to avoid being hanged back in Britain. Just a good ole war flick. It looks like you are having a blast in Alaska. It is one of the places I truly want to see before I depart this world. Keep writing and snapping photos. It is the trip of a lifetime for you. Godspeed. Link to comment
Warren_H
Your my hero!!!!! Shouldn't that be shero? I've enjoyed the pictures and story as well I'm leaving for Alaska this Saturday. Jacqueline
Last Thursday, I decided since I have been to several BMW tech days in the “lower 48” I’d see what a KLR tech day in Alaska was all about. Also thought I might get some pointers on how to go about working on Whip’s KTM when he gets up here… .. Both bikes start with a K so I figure they have to be the same, or close enough . There were a lot of KLR’s, and a lot of eager riders ready to be mechanics. Under Beezer’s (member of the Adventure Rider board (plaid shirt)) watchful eye a lot of wrenching was going on . This seem to be a popular tool that afternoon. I give this rider a lot of credit…. He wrecked on the Top of the World Highway coming back from Dust 2 Dawson and did some serious damage to his right shoulder….. but that wasn’t stopping him from wrenching on his bike . In the mist of all the KLR’s was this Dakar with a leaky Fork Seal. Leaky fork seals on F650’s seem to be a popular thing up here this summer. I was very impressed with the young rider; Aaron. This past weekend I managed to do my own mini tech day; when my battery went dead (for the forth and final time). I will have to admit each time I have had a problem with my battery it was because of something I did. I now know how to put acid in a battery, charge it, and change it out. I’m getting so familiar and comfortable with the bike….. I’m ALMOST ready to tear into the motor…. If I need to ! Link to comment
Jacqueline
Saturday I went to Kenai Fjords National Park in Seward, located 125 miles south of Anchorage on Alaska’s famous Kenai Peninsula. Where I boarded the vessel, Greatland for a four hour wildlife cruise; where I saw..... A Sea Otter Bald Eagles Steller Sea Lions Seabird Colonies In the middle of the cruise we stopped on Fox Island were we were serviced a nice meal……. and where I went for a short walk to see what beauty the Island held.... ... wonder if there might have been a bear close by. My Dad did a trip to Alaska a few years ago on his Goldwing and has been bugging me ever since to do a second trip with him. Your pictures and travel stories have been great. His pictures didn't really do the country side much justice (he's not real good with a camera). Keep it up, you have me jonesing for an adventure of my own. Link to comment

Jacqueline
I took a ride to Talkeetna…. The doorway to Denali…. WOW, WOW, WOW! The Talkeetna Spur Road….. A view of Mt. McKinley…. (about 160 miles away)….. Talkeetna started as a supple station for miners and trappers and has maintained its rustic spirit; it’s a small town that keeps civilization at arm’s length.….. I love this town! Flowers (wild and domestic) were in full bloom and adorned many of the log cabins that many locals still live in. I could live in one of these little cabins. Miners and trappers who live in the bush without running water or electricity come into town for supplies, messages, to do laundry and for showers….. I was told there were no snakes in Alaska…… I guess they were wrong….. A bummer sticker I purchased says it all: TALKEETNA,ALASKA Where the Road Ends And Life Begins I am going to return to Talkeetna to take a small plane…flightseeing …. RatSnake
That snake wasn't native to Alaska, as I'm sure you've guessed. It was a corn snake (a member of the rat snake family) who's usually found much further south. More like GA and FL. Link to comment

Jacqueline
Last week I spent working for Barb at Alaska Leather…. meeting many riders that were passing through….. and catching up with local riders that I have come to know over the pass two months. When I first arrived at the Alaskan border it was a little scary …. Alaska is a huge place and I didn’t know anyone; but in the short time I have been here I have come to know so many wonderful, friendly people and I have come feel right at home , which will make it hard to leave . The riders here are so friendly; a group of them got together and had a BBQ to welcome a group of 16-18 Globe Riders from the UK, New Zealand, and Australia. These riders are a group from www.GlobeBusters.com. They shipped their bikes to Anchorage to start their Trans Americas Expedition which takes them from Prudhoe Bay to Ushuaia (the tip of South America). What an interesting group of people!! In the group were only two women, one riding pillion and the other was this wonderful woman….. I won’t try and spell her name as I’ll ruin it…. But I will get the correct spelling…… She is originally from Australia but is living in the UK with her husband and son. She is my age and about the same size as me. She is two inches taller then I, putting her at 5 foot 2 inches….. and she rides a HP2!!!! WOW! The front forks have been altered and the triple-tree brought down on them. The front wheel has been changed, and the tension on the air shock as been let out as much as possible. She allowed me to sit on the bike and told me the secret of how to get on it and have the air shock work to my advantage. Not only is she riding this HP2, she has not been riding long (just under a year), and she has only ridden this HP2 for 3,000 miles before trip . When I get back to Florida I might have to stop by Miller BMW in Tallahassee and see if Dusty still has that HP2 sitting on his showroom floor ! Link to comment

Jacqueline
My son arrived in Anchorage at midnight Friday…… Saturday morning we were up early and off to Whittier. On the way to Whittier we saw Dall Sheep resting on the mountain side along Turnagain Arm….. Whittier was created by the military during World War II. The US was looking for a spot to build a secret military installation which needed to be an ice-free port, but to be inaccessible as possible, lost in visibility-reducing cloud cover and surrounded by impassable mountains….. They found it in Whittier! The Army maintained Whittier until 1968 and until 2000 Whittier was accessible only by train or boat; in 2000 the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel was overhauled for auto traffic. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel goes through 2.7 miles of ancient bedrock beneath the Chugach Mountains. The Gateway to Prince William Sound; Whittier the jumping off point for enjoying the Sound and where we took a Glacier Cruise. In Prince William Sound we saw many otters…. He looks like he is having fun! Seabird colonies….. Magnificent glaciers…….. Harbor seals……. BEAUTIFUL seascapes and landscapes..... What a perfect day! Link to comment

Jacqueline
Fishing has been on my agenda since I arrived in Alaska. How can one come to a place known for fishing, and not fish? I thought I would go salmon fishing, but one thing on my son’s agenda was to go Halibut Fishing….. and why not? “The city of Homer likes to brag that it is the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World.” So at 2:00am on Monday we were on the road and headed for Homer to board a fishing boat by 7:00am! Yes, another port and another boat! Homer: Stunning beauty…. Homer Spit, Kachemack Bay and the Kenai Mountains… WOW! The sun coming up on Homer Spit. Rods ready and waiting…. Leaving port…… Tyler(First Hand)getting the bait ready... I will admit that a 3 lb. weight and a 15 lb. fish are not easy for me to reel in…… I had to hug the pole and work at reeling in the line and after about doing that four times, I was hurting! One of those is mine…… I caught six Halibut, but you can only keep two……. I know a couple of the ones I let go were bigger, but it’s a gamble one has to take in hopes of getting a bigger one. Some times it pays off, some times it doesn’t. Our catch for the day…… Again our catch for the day…. (all clean and boxed). Link to comment
